Teacher faces jail over sex with student

A 59-year-old teacher has appeared in court in Luleå accused of having sexually abused a 15-year-old girl. The man faces two years in prison for abusing his authority over the girl, who was one of his students, according to local media.

At the beginning of the year the man resigned from the school after being confronted over his relationship with the girl.

The abuse is said to have begun during the autumn term in 2006. The teacher allegedly kissed the girl, who was then only aged 14. When she turned 15 he repeatedly persuaded her to have sex with him.

According to the man responsible for Luleå’s schools, Sture Bryggman, it was the girl’s father who discovered the relationship.

“From what I understand the girl’s father contacted the headmaster after reading through the girl’s email and becoming suspicious,” Bryggman told newspaper Aftonbaldet.

During questioning the man has admitted to having a sexual relationship with the girl.

While the age of consent in Sweden is 15, a person who sexually exploits a position of trust over someone aged up to 18 could face two or more years in jail.
