Four questioned over arson attacks

Four people have been taken in for questioning by police in Gothenburg, suspected of involvement in arson attacks on buildings in the Angered area of the city over the past few nights.

According to a statement from Gothenburg Police, three of those being questioned are in their twenties. The trio are suspected specifically of involvement in arson attacks that took place on Sunday night.

The fourth person is in his fifties.

“He is suspected of involvement, but not in the same way as the young people,” said Jan Strannegård of Gothenburg Police.

Police have so far refused to give details about the suspects’ responses to the accusations.

Prosecutors are expected to decide on Tuesday afternoon whether the suspects should remain in police custody.

In addition to the attacks on Sunday night, an attempt to set fire to a building in the Lövgärdet area of Angered took place at 5:30am on Tuesday. The building, on Kryddnejlikegatan, is used by a canoe rental company.

Police said that a window had been smashed and an object thrown into the building. It is suspected that the object might have been intended to set light to the building.

A nearby community centre had been destroyed on Sunday night, while on Saturday night an attempt was made to set light to a house in the same area. It has not yet been established whether the incidents are related.
