Tourists flock to Sweden – despite rain

Sweden has retained its popularity with foreign tourists during this year's damp summer, new statistics suggest.

The export value of tourism in Sweden grew in July by 2.9 percent compared to July 2006, according to statistics based on Stockholm Arlanda Airport’s traffic figures.

Tourism in July had an export value of 12.9 billion kronor ($1.88 billion). If the trend is repeated in August, traditionally a strong month for tourism, then 2007 as a whole could bring in 80 billion kronor of foreign currency.

The tourist industry is expected to provide around 150,000 full-time jobs in Sweden in 2007, an increase of nearly 3,000 on last year.
