Sweden's family-owned hamburger chain Max has announced plans to expand its concept to the Middle East.

CEO Richard Bergfors recently travelled to the region to meet with possible franchise partners.

Max expects to open some 50 outlets in Saudi Arabia alone, said Bergfors in a statement.

According to the company, fast food is gaining in popularity in the Middle East with a particular demand for healthy fast food as well as alternatives to American chains.

Max opened its first restaurant in 1968 and prides itself on having established a presence in Sweden five years before McDonald's.
