A woman has been arrested in central Sweden on suspicion of killing her new-born baby. Her mother, in her sixties, has also been arrested. The mother is suspected of infanticide; the grandmother is suspected of murder.

Police became suspicious yesterday that the woman, in her forties and from Gävle in central Sweden, might have harmed her child. They are so far not revealing whether the baby's body has been found.

Both women have been questioned by investigators, but police are revealing few details.

"We are waiting to see what comes out in questioning," said Hessam Akbari, spokesman for Gävleborg Police.

Police have searched the woman's flat and a forensic examination of the apartment is planned.
