Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder after two other men were run over by a car in central Stockholm on Tuesday night.

The victims, aged 28 and 31, were run over near Stureplan, at the heart of Stockholm's nightlife and business district. Two men, born in 1985 and 1986, were arrested later in the night. They are suspected of murder, with an alternative charge of serious assault possible, said police spokesman Björn Engström.

"It is clear that they ran over these men to injure them. This was not a pure accident," said Engström.

Engström said the victims and the men in the car had earlier been involved in an argument.

"Then when the two men were walking on Birger Jarlsgatan a car came and drove right over them," Engström said.

The car then drove away from the scene, but thanks to a witness who followed the car police were able to arrest the man fifteen minutes later on the crossing of Grev Turegatan and Linnegatan.

Police were alerted to the event at 3.24am.

The suspects are due to be questioned on Wednesday morning, when they will be told the crimes of which they are suspected.

Engström said there were suspicions that the suspects were under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
