A reindeer has died from stress-related injuries after being tormented on Friday by one or more snowmobile drivers outside Stensele in northern Sweden, newspaper Västerbottens-Kuriren (VK) reports.

The animal died of exhaustion on Friday after it was circled repeatedly by at least one snowmobile on the ice to the east of the town.

"I don't understand how anybody could do something so stupid," reindeer herder Tomas Andersson told VK.

The incident, which has sparked a furious reaction among the newspaper's readers, was reported to the police on Saturday.
