The girl, identified as ten-year-old Engla Höglund, had been to football training in Stjärnsund and left her teammates to cycle the five kilometres home around 2pm on Saturday afternoon. She never turned up and her bike was found 500 metres from her home in the small town in northern central Sweden.
The ten-year-old called her mum on her mobile phone as she was leaving training just before 2pm. They spoke several times as she cycled home and their last conversation took place as Engla was close to Rönnösund near Klarängarna. When Engla's mother tried to contact her 30 minutes later, there was no answer.
The police were informed at 4.54pm and a search for Engla was quickly launched. The search continued into Saturday evening and through the night. Dogs and a helicopter were deployed in the search.
Around 600 metres from her home Engla met a group of people familiar to her. One of the group had a new camera and took a picture of the missing girl. The picture has been handed over to police and is being used to help in the search for her.
50 volunteers were initially involved in the search before the area was sealed off by police at around 7pm so as not to disturb the search dogs.
The police suspect that Engla has been abducted and are keen to trace a light-green car seen close to the football pitch.
"It was seen acting strangely in the vicinity of the football pitch."
Police expect around 100 people to be involved as the search continues on Sunday. Police technicians from Gävle will join the search.
"All available resources have been called in on overtime to work with this," said Jimmie Lagerkvist at Dalarna police to local newspaper Dalarnas Tidning.
Dalarnas Tidning has released a description of the girl and anyone with information is urged to contact the police on 076-105272.
Engla is 150 centimetres tall, normal build, brown eyes, long brown curly hair with a hair band and wearing glasses with brown/burgundy frames. She was wearing a green mid-length winter coat with breast and side pockets, probably black track-pants and black/white training shoes.
