The 25-year-old Swedish woman was assaulted in broad daylight in central Cefalù on Sicily’s north coast on Sunday. She was then thrown into a car which left the scene at high speed.
Witnesses to the assault alerted the police who responded with their anti-kidnapping action plan. Road blocks were put in place on all the major road routes 30 kilometres from Cefalù and military police gave chase before eventually arresting the kidnappers.
The vehicle, a BMW M5, was shot at and stopped on the A20, 15 kilometres west of Cefalù, Aftonbladet reports.
The young woman was able to escape the car as soon as it had come to a stop and ran towards the military police screaming:
“They were going to kill me, they were going to kill me.”
Italian police have charged three Swedish citizens with kidnapping and assault, according to the Swedish foreign ministry, UD.
Aftonbladet reports that the three perpetrators are the woman’s 27-year-old boyfriend, his 28-year-old sister and her 23-year-old boyfriend.
