The Swedish government on Monday condemned the killing of the top United Nations official in Somalia, calling the assassination an assault on peace efforts in the war-torn country.

"It is with great dismay and sadness that I have learned that Osman Ali Ahmed, the head of UN Development Programme in Somalia, has been shot to death in Mogadishu," Swedish Minister for International Development Cooperation Gunilla Carlsson said in a statement.

"The murder ... is a blow to the efforts towards peace, security and sustainable development in Somalia," she added.

Ahmed became the latest victim in a string of attacks on aid workers in the lawless country when gunmen shot him at close-range as he left a mosque on Sunday.
