AIK's long journey from Stockholm down to the south-east coast looked likely to bear fruit with first half goals from Saihou Jagne giving the guests a 1-2 lead going into the half time break.
But a second half equalizer from Patrik Ingelsten and a well-placed Rasmus Elm free kick were enough to give Kalmar the win and put them ten points clear of sixth placed AIK.
Kalmar do however still have Elfsborg breathing down their necks. The Borås side ground out a 1-0 win over Gothenburg side GAIS to remain just one point behind the leaders. Teddy Lucic scored the only goal of the game in the 43rd minute.
Helsingborg also stayed in touch at the top with a 2-1 home win over Sundsvall. An in-form Henrik Larsson dominated proceedings at a wet and windy Olympia stadium despite not making it onto the scoresheet.
René Makondele's first half opener was cancelled out in the second half by Sundsvall's Ari Freyr Skulason. But Marcus Lantz kept the southerners within shouting distance of Kalmar and Elfsborg with a penalty in the 73rd minute.
