A father of three from Dalarna in central Sweden has been charged with attempted murder for trying to poison his children with the exhaust from a running car.

The man is also accused of having cut his oldest child, and 8-year-old girl, with a knife.

The incident took place near Sälen in early March. Local media reports that the father had kidnapped the children and then placed them in a car.

He then attached a hose from a vacuum to the car's exhaust pipe and ran it into the car's interior.

According to the indictment, the man also sliced the throat of his 8-year-old daughter with a knife. But the girls managed to disarm her father and escaped with minor injuries.

It was the father himself who then called authorities to say he wanted to kill his children and commit suicide.

An ambulance arrived on the scene before the police, and moments later the father agreed to release the children to the ambulance personnel, who then transported the children to hospital in Falun.

The man was then arrested and held on suspicion of attempted murder.

In addition to three cases of attempted murder, the father is also suspected of repeatedly assaulting and harassing the children's mother, including leaving threatening telephone messages, according to the Dala-Demokraten newspaper.
