A man from southern Sweden is suspected of committing numerous sexual crimes on the internet with underage girls, perhaps hundreds, local newspaper Helsingborgs Dagblad reports.

Regional prosecutor Charlotte Österlund has said that the scope of the suspect's activities is unclear. She did not rule out the possibility that hundreds of underage girls have been victims.

Some 20 cases are being investigated by the prosecutor and police.

“In my opinion it's a form of child rape to subject an underage person to carry out certain sexual acts in front of a webcam,” Österlund told Helsingborgs Dagblad.

The 35-year-old has been in custody since October, suspected of having raped a teenage girl. Earlier last year he had been released on parole from a two year prison sentence, having been convicted of raping a 13-year-old girl.

Österlund is quoted as saying that some of the alleged internet paedophile crimes were committed while the man was serving his prison sentence, “but whether he actually committed the crimes inside the prison or while on home leave is still unclear.”
