Malmö celebrates as Öresund bridge turns 10
Tens of thousands of people lined Malmö's beaches on Thursday to watch a massive fireworks display to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the opening of the Öresund bridge.

A tonne of fireworks had been laid out along and around the bridge and at 11.45pm the party started.

The fireworks had however been delayed by half an hour due to a fault with the helicopter that had been drafted in to film the festivities.

“The helicopter that was due to film and document the show broke down and it took a little while to procure a new. So we had to delay the fireworks,” said Jesper Skjönnemand at bridge operator Öresundbron to the local Skånska Dagbladet daily.

The fireworks display was accompanied by a laser show that also experienced a hiccup, according to several media.

“This might sound slightly strange, but this was due to the weather being too good. It was very dry in the air, with very few particles – ideal for fireworks, but less so for the laser,” Skönnemand said.

Aside from the tens of thousands reported to have watched the show on site, Öresundsbron claims that over 13,000 people visited their website during the evening to watch the live feed.

The Öresund bridge opened on July 2nd 2000 and after an initial slow start has proved a popular means to cross from Sweden to Denmark. More than 16,000 people use the bridge to travel to work, mostly in the Danish capital Copenhagen.
