The five friends who asked not to be named, begged 30-year-old British businessman Shrien Dewani to return to South Africa to clear his name, in a letter published in The Sun newspaper on Friday.

South African prosecutors have launched proceedings to extradite Dewani amid accusations he hired hitmen to murder his wife in November during their honeymoon in Cape Town. He is fighting the extradition in Britain.

In the letter, the friends asked why on the night of the murder he chose to take his 28-year-old wife to a sushi restaurant so far from their hotel when they could easily have eaten near the hotel itself.

They also asked why the couple left the restaurant after just 40 minutes.

Anni Dewani, whose family live in Sweden, was shot and killed during a reported carjacking on the outskirts of Cape Town.

Zola Tongo, the driver of the taxi in which the young bride was travelling, said he was paid 1,500 rand ($220) for his role in the murder. He was sentenced to 18 years in jail after he turned state's witness and implicated the victim's husband in plotting to kill her.

Shrien Dewani's family claim Tongo's evidence is unreliable because he was offered a reduced sentence in return for cooperating with the investigation.

Anni Dewani's friends asked why her husband emerged without a scratch on his body.

"Why don't you voluntarily go to court and show South African police suspicions are wrong?" they wrote.

They also asked why his family had employed the services of Max Clifford, a high-profile British publicist more used to dealing with celebrities.

Clifford has insisted that the South African prosecutors' claims are "flimsy and ridiculous".

Story continues below…

He says his client is devastated by his wife's death and carries a Barbie doll to remind him of his lost love.

Dewani, who returned to Britain with his wife's body days after the killing, was later arrested after walking into a police station in Bristol in southwest England.

He was released on bail pending an extradition hearing and denies any involvement in his wife's death.

Why does the Local insist on calling people "Swedes" who are quite obviously nothing of the sort. The same goes for the "Swedes" arrested for the planned motoon attack in Denmark. Swedish passport-holders - yes, "Swedes" - no!

@Dave N

It is a deliberate effort to render the terms 'Swede' and 'Swedish' completely meaningless. It's postmodern nihilism in action.

@The Local

Dave N is absolutely correct ! It is almost as if you believe constant repetition of the same lies will somehow magically turn into truth. Anyone with a surname called 'Dewani' is not and will never be Swedish.

The picture says it al,l they have obviously embraced Swedidish folk customs and lifestyle. Whatever money spent re-locating her to Sweden was obviously well spent. She probably met her husband through an international dating site that hooks up Swedes with other people who just look Swedish like the Husband Maharaji Englander.

More national resources wasted on foreigners that could have been spent on Sweden's children and elderly.

A new years has started and for The Local's resident racists it is business as usual.

If you have a Swedish passport then you are Swedish as far the the law and the rest of world is concerned. Live with it.

They could just as easily be United States citizens; or "Americans." If they are granted citizenship, they are Swedes. (Just not native, is all.)

To everyone (other than engagebrain): *Add "dark" or "Muslim"*

Then they came for the trade unionists,

Then they came for the Jews,

and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for me

and by that time no one was left to speak up."

Well, well, well, and I thought you Swedes were soooo civilized -to think that I have been envying you for ages...:that's what comes from watching Wallander on tv and Hans Rosling on Youtube. So if a Swedish young couple were to to all the way to China to adopt a Chinese baby and brought her over to Sweden and brought her up and she spoke Swedish and thought she was Swedish, would you say she is definitively not Swedish on account of her having certain facial features?. If a young African couple are refugees in Sweden and have a child there and black as the kid is, he speaks only Swedish and does all the Swedish stuff, is he not Swedish?

Absolutely spot on.

Could not have put it any better.

But as you have just joined, you should be aware that 90% of those writing racist crap on this forum are not Swedish and most have never even been to Sweden
17:53 January 2, 2011 by Dave N
Absolutely spot on, noisyneighbour. Chinese and Africans cannot ever become Swedes. Neither can a Zulu ever become an Eskimo.

Deluded people may lie to themselves and pretend that this is possible but common sense says it is no more plausible than an Irish Setter born in France becoming a French poodle.

If you have a Swedish passport, all that it proves is that you are a Swedish passport holder. A passport is a piece of card and plastic - it does not magically change ethnicity.

@noisy neighbor- Look at the picture. Does it look like she adopted the Swedish culture or did she just live there. I've lived in Iran and Iraq, but have no loyalty to those countries, they honestly expected none and no Iranian or Iraqi would delude himself into thinking that I was Iranian or Iraqi. They certainly would not think I had a Right to live in Iran or Iraq! We were there as long as it benefited their governments, and not a moment longer. Iran and Iraq are wonderful tourist destinations, but you have to remember that push come to shove the Muslims stick together and the Europeans, Americans, Australians, Israelis and Canadians are evacuated on the same airplanes. I have also lived in the US, Great Britain, Sweden, Norway and Germany. If those countries were threatened I would gladly fight for them, because we all share the same Western culture and values and I would not want those people's Freedom taken away.

@Rick Methven

I hope you are Swedish though

@Dave N and @Wenddiver

I don't put much stock on which colour my skin is or any other physical features of my body. I should think that what language I speak, how I make a living, where do I pay taxes, etc are the things that define me.

Are you really arguing that a black child born in Sweden, who speaks only Swedish, has gone to school in Sweden is not really Swedish just because his parents are from Congo or other African country? And, hey, he may choose to don some traditional African textiles on his wedding... does that negate all his Swedish accomplishments? And would he have to restrain from ever Congolese food lest his Swedishness is corrupted?
12:24 January 3, 2011 by Dave N
Yes, I am really arguing that an African child cannot ever be a Swede. And neither can a Swede become an African. It is physically impossible.

Picture this -

A pregant Zebu cow is brought from India by a farmer from Inverness, Scotland. The young male calf is born in a field occupied by a herd of Highland cattle.. The calf grows up with the Highland cattle, eats the same cattle feed and browses on Scottish heather. Could you tell me at what stage this Zebu calf becomes a Scottish Highland bull? I'll tell you when - never!

Only someone blinded by Political Correctness and wishful thinking could believe that an African can magically become a Swede. You know - the sort of people that believed that the Emperor in the fairy-tale was wearing a fantastic suit of clothes when he, in fact, was completely naked.

Passports can be taken away. Citizenship can be revoked. Ethnicity cannot. And an African, quite obviously, cannot become a Swede.

@ Dave N

"Yes, I am really arguing that an African child cannot ever be a Swede. And neither can a Swede become an African. It is physically impossible."

Then explain this

Early human migrations began when Homo erectus first migrated out of Africa over the Levantine corridor and Horn of Africa to Eurasia about 1.8 million years ago.

Modern humans, Homo sapiens, evolved in Africa up to 200,000 years ago and reached the Near East around 70 millennia ago. From the Near East, these populations spread east to South Asia by 50 millennia ago, and on to Australia by 40 millennia ago, when for the first time H. sapiens reached territory never reached by H. erectus. Europe was reached by H. sapiens around 40 millennia ago, replacing the Neanderthal population. East Asia was reached by 30 millennia ago.

@Dave N

Both the Husband and his now deceased wife are ethnically people from the Indian Sub continent and culturally Hindi. He is British she was Swedish. That is the Nationality that they hold.There is no way that you or your pure race buddies can change this.

You are British ( or are you English or Scottish or Welsh or are you unsure because your great great grandfather screwed your Great great grandmother who was and indentured servant from Asia or Africa.)

In Wales in the Tiger Bay area of Cardiff there are a lot of people who as they say locally " have a touch of the tar brush" stemming from local Welsh girls "getting together" with Lascar seamen. You can see that history in people like Tom Jones but he is as Welsh.

This also begs the question as to who can be termed "true" Swedes who can say? what is the criteria to be applied? If it blond blue eyed. My wife who can trace he family back 400 years of Svenssons/Petterssons in Sweden would not be Swedish.

If you live and work in Sweden, pay your taxes and are a national of Sweden whether by birth or naturalisation then you are SWEDISH.

I have an adopted son ethnically he hails from south east Asia but he has been a Swedish National since he was 6 months old. He is definitely Swedish in all aspects, he lives, works, pays taxes in Sweden, speaks fluent Swedish and has done his Swedish military service but I suppose according to you he is a "Swede".

What a pathetic little racist idiot you really are
