The findings come from a comprehensive study on the sexual habits of Swedes aged 15 to 29 and carried out by researchers at the University of Gothenburg.

According to the study, 25 percent of young Swedes were under the influence of alcohol or other drugs when they lost their virginity, or during their most recent sexual encounter.

"They haven't taken alcohol, cannabis, or other drugs. We also see that they describe their debut in positive words. They want to do it again," Jonna Abelsson, one of the researchers behind the report, told the TT news agency.

She added that men are somewhat more positive about their first sexual experience than women.

Abelsson said she wasn't necessarily surprised that young Swedes abstained from alcohol when they decide to have sex.

"There may be this view that that is the case, but our findings say something else," she said.

"It's also the case that the majority of respondents say they were together with a steady partner the last time they had sex. That can also explain why they were sober."

The study did find, however, that respondents younger than 20-years-old were more likely to be drunk when having sex than those who are over 25 years of age.

The survey, known as the UngKAB09 study, also found that Swedes "make their sexual debut" at 16, but respondents were able to define themselves what constituted the start of their sex lives.

Story continues below…

Women had a slightly earlier sexual debut than men, while nearly one of five respondents reported that their debut came before their 15th birthday.

The study, which is the largest of its kind in Sweden to date, also showed that Swedish youngsters only used a condom during sexual intercourse three times out of ten.

"but respondents were able to define themselves what constituted the start of their sex lives"

There in lies the problem.

I have met girls in the past where oral sex was ok, and then anal sex was ok and thye are still "virgins"... pretty much anything was ok as long as there was no "1 to 1" genital penetration (hard to write this without getting graphic - but basically: anything goes and you are still a virgin except straight boy girl intercourse).

While there were others who insisted that even a Handj** does not mean you are a virgin anymore or penetration with a foreign object.

They should have defined what is sex, and when you "officially" pop your cherry and this study would have been stronger.

So it lasts 30 seconds instead of the usual drunken full minute... Nice.

A shame really, sexual partners alway seem smarter and better looking after a drink. Don't forget that sex always seems like a better idea after a drink!

"She added that men are somewhat more positive about their first sexual experience than women." compared to? there is no previous indication of anything negative!

"while nearly one of respondents reported that their debut came before their 15th birthday." maybe you should have added "in ten"?

for crying out loud, that's the most drunkenly written article I've read here so far. at least have the decency to correct it before removing my comment.

Alcohol isnt as easily available to young swedes compared to other europeans.. id imagine they dont want to wait till they can buy alcohol before they pop their cherries.

Is sex with a Swede any less boring when one is drunk as when one is sober?
11:42 April 9, 2011 by johnny1939
According to the former President Clinton oral sex is not sex. Anyway like Roy E I would very much like to know how much money was wasted on this totally useless research. Do we really care what the kids do how and when?? I am more worried about my own sex life....sex after 70hehe

What's my age got to do with anything?
20:12 April 9, 2011 by jimthat
so with so much sex why not as many children

shouldnt contraceptives be forbidden?

we would recover a dinamic birth rate of 6 or 7 childs a couple

in 20 or so years our population would be 30 millions or so

we would be a powerfull country

is it time to stop the sex party? we could start the breeding and family party
