The survey, carried out by the Swedish National Railway (SJ) for the third year in a row, showed that the capital and traditional summer hotspots in the west of the country are still where people will flock to in the coming months.

When asked which city they would most like to visit this summer, 31 percent, said they would prefer to go to Stockholm, while 29 percent plumped for Gothenburg.

The west coast was even more popular among those looking to spend their vacation in a resort. 15 per cent said they would travel there, slightly ahead of Gotland in second place.

The same survey last year again saw Stockholm chosen as the most popular destination for a city break, while Liseberg in Gothenburg, the largest amusement park in Scandinavia was rated the most popular attraction.

The other huge attraction for the family each year is the Kolmården safari park.

Story continues below…

The survey is carried out each year by the railways organization together with its customer magazine Kupé and is used to track travelling trends among Swedes.

During the winter, the most popular destinations for Swedes are ski rsorts Åre and Sälen.

Stockholm is a fantastic place to visit as well as to live in. Anyone who doesn't agree try living in Russia, for example in St. - Petersburg....

I was in Sweden for the first time last summer. Don't get me wrong as I do like the country in general but what surprised was that it had a lack of vibe. Areas that should of been bussling with cafes and people resembled ghost towns and this was in the middle of summer. Everyone seems to hide indoors too scared to try anything new away from the norm.

Stockholm is a great place to visit/live. With a little imagination and planning; in due time it could become the destination choice for many.

Where in Stockholm were you?

Went by the Wasa museum few days ago and it had a sign saying it was full and would let more visitors in as people left the building. Long queue outside in the heat. Generally I don't even know were more tourists could fit. Pity that many nice places are just crowded with the phony stores/cafés that always stock up where the tourists are.
