The man, who was practising yoga in the sun, was only wearing a thong.

“Did they think he was some kind of a sexual criminal just because he was wearing a g-string?” said holiday-maker Ellinor Perlefelt to local paper Norran.

She was upset by the incident and told the paper she was convinced that it was someone among the other sunbathers that made a complaint to the police.

The police confirmed to Norran that it was indeed some of the beach dwellers that had contacted them after witnessing the man adopt yoga positions in the flimsy attire.

Witnesses to the incident also told the paper how the police took the man with them to the parking area for a short talk. After that the man went back to his towel, got dressed and left the beach.

“It must have been terribly humiliating for him,” said Perlefelt to Norran.

According to the paper the police also questioned people who had been sitting nearby on how they had perceived the situation, to find out if there had been any sexual harassment.

But according to Ellinor Perlefelt the police turning up and questioning the man made for a completely unacceptable situation.

“If people are that worried to see naked skin they really shouldn’t go to the beach,” she said to Norran.

Story continues below…

At the police they concur that the incident was perhaps not handled as well as it could have been.

“Of course it would have been better if plain clothes officers could have gone to the beach,” said Johan Karlsson at the Skellefteå police to news agency TT, adding that the thong-wearing man is not under suspicion for any crime.

I guess this means I can't wear my lime green mankini to some beaches in Sweden. How Victorian!

It would have been better if they'd sent plain clothes officers instead, would it? How about NO?
10:32 July 22, 2011 by Soft Boiled
What is plain clothes beach attire for the police and where do they hide their handcuffs? ;)
10:34 July 22, 2011 by Eroth
Sweden and its moralism, i could puke for less. As a resident of Skellefteå im on my way to buy a thong then im off to Falkträsket to show my support.

If you do, be sure to tell The Local - I would love to read about 'the Swedish thong revolution' on these pages...

Year ago, no owuld have batted an eyelid if someone was naked on the beach.

These puritan attitudes and those who have them should be deported back to whatever hellhole they came from.

There is nothing wrong with the human body, naked or clothed.
11:54 July 22, 2011 by johnny1939
I enjoy watching people on the beach as to the variety of sizes and get ups. I see nothing wrong w/ the mankini or nakedness for that matter as long as they do not go out of their way to promote something or the other. I do not understand why the police got involved in the first place. Maybe his rights were violated? After all he was covered up. We are getting more and more American by the minute...too bad.

who is in the picture? One of the local staff posing for the shot?

what rubbish, had there been a lady, people would have no problem. tides are turning
12:28 July 22, 2011 by Swedesmith
I suppose me and my buddies can't practise sumo on the beach anymore.

You're absolutely correct thinkright24, it's sad :(

hahahahaha ok with this line

"Witnesses to the incident also told the paper how the police took the man with them to the parking area for a short talk. After that the man went back to his towel, got dressed and left the beach."

it does not say the policemen tried to tell him to change. It could have been other way round. Perhaps the policemen were Adoring his bending and such clothes. Maybe they got turned on :P and they took him for a ride in the park and told the guy about their feelings. And the guy, feeling molested came back and quickly dressed up

13:07 July 22, 2011 by Rishonim
The one to call the police was most probably a wide-hip, prune like boobs, wrinkled face 40 year old with a name like Barbro

I could have sworn Sweden was a part of Europe, where nakedness is no big deal. If you see your neighbors naked in the window it's your fault for looking in their window. I see older women in their bras doing yardwork and it's ok here. I go to the local beaches and see topless women and it's ok.

But god forbid a man wears a thong at the beach. The beaches in California are more tolerant of men wearing thongs than here I guess. People stare because of the eww factor but it's more of mind your own business as long as they aren't doing anything sexual on the beach. I guess Sweden is becoming worse than America, too sad.
13:25 July 22, 2011 by Smokebox
Maybe he just had a hairy crack????
13:37 July 22, 2011 by Marc the Texan
OK , so the guy is a bit weird. I don't see what the harm was. You can get away with the thong, but not thong and yoga. That's a step too far. In the decade that I've known Sweden, this nation has become more and more aligned with suburban American views. And that's not a good thing.
13:43 July 22, 2011 by JohnAndersson
Once again the Swedish police out of control...
14:22 July 22, 2011 by cogito
@Tennin (#15),

If you want people to mind their own business, then don't exhibit your your stuff on a public beach. Do it in the privacy of your home.

It's question of aesthetics, not morality, and aesthetically, it's ewwww.

But I do like the headline TL put on it.
14:38 July 22, 2011 by jacquelinee
@ Tennin @cognito

I agree with both of you. If it is acceptable for women, it is acceptable for men. However, when I go to the beach I prefer not to see Ti-ts and a-ss ( the later, whether male or female) That's just me and I imagine there are others who enjoy the beach for precisely that reason. Got nothing against the male or female form, just don't want it up in our faces when having a picnic, building a sand castle, swimming or enjoying the day. And I am sure, whether male OR female, anyone going to the beach and parading around with their male or female bits and pieces out and about for the world to see, has done so precisely so the world will look. But if the police drag the green horneyt to the parking lot for a reprimand, they best be dragging bare bodacious Barbie out and throwing a coverup over her too. Whats good for the bull is the same for the cow.
14:47 July 22, 2011 by fikatid
I think everyone should be wearing a burqa to the beach. That would work!! No more complaints!!

Perhaps, the one who was complaining was indeed wearing a burqa. :)
15:02 July 22, 2011 by jacquelinee
Never had a burqa (don't wear them in Scotland. Pretty sure though that they'd be hot on the beach. Burqa ot no burqa, I don't want to be subjected to be looking up the crack of somone's ar se who is bending over in front of me at the beach regardless of the gender. If one is as much of a meglamaniac that they want the world to be aware that they have a set of glands and a muscle group on display ..well..more power to them and sad that that is the only way they have to draw attention to themselves. In fairness to this gentleman in question, if he has to forfeit his thong, then g string Gunilla should have to forfeit hers too. It is just plain sexual discrimination otherwise.

But, I imagine the complaint did not come from a lady in a burqa, but rather a man with a substantially smaller packet of "equipment"
15:11 July 22, 2011 by terriergirl
Too cold in Scotland for a thong outdoors but if you visit Edinburgh's Iyengar centre there is a keen yoga fan whose 'mouse' tends to pop out of his 'house' a bit too often in many poses. Not a short cut to zen for the rest of us.

Ban both thongs and yoga, just to be on the safe side.
15:40 July 22, 2011 by tadchem
If the man had been rbeaking a law, he should have been either arrested or cited. The fact that neither happened suggests that, in the opinions of the officers no law was being broken. Their attention should have turned immediately to whomever was anonymously using the police as a tool to inflict harassment on the poor guy.

We are allowing our circumstances of 'law and order' to be decided by self-anointed victims who are controlling everybody else's actions athrough anonymous complaints.
15:41 July 22, 2011 by MichaelZWilliamson
What exactly did the police probe? :-?
15:43 July 22, 2011 by Smiling Canuk
Several years ago I visited Australia. As we were heading out for the beach my Aussie host asked me if I was bringing my thongs. I replied that I was much too modest for that and was only going to wear my speedo. Turns out that in Australia "thongs" are things you wear on your feet, not up your butt crack. :-) Called flip-flops or sandals in other English speaking countries.

BTW - I agree with the comments that too much of the world is adapting American mid west norms for beach wear these days.
16:21 July 22, 2011 by tonymblack
I wonder how many people would of moaned complained if it had been a pretty female in a G string ?? Not F**king many !!!

What a treat headline!
17:23 July 22, 2011 by Tennin
I didn't enjoy seeing Inga's woman-ness boucing around the place, especially it was in the way of my view of the beach. But as the swedes mentioned to me, if I didn't like it I should look the other way or move to a different part of the beach where Inga's high beams weren't blocking my view.

For all those of you crying for equality and the banning of thongs on women...THINK PLEASE. Be careful what you ask for you just may get it! To ban these would indeed be a travesty for all hetero men. I'm getting old .. don't deprive me of the few pleasures I have left. Sarcasm is the greatest form of humor.

Breaking news......hahahahah......you'r not going to belive this..There is a guy wearing nothing but thong just like that guy on the beach in Swden here in U.S.But this guy in U.S is riding a motor bike on free way.He was shown on tv news wearing green thong people were taking his pic and laughing. When he was asked why he was wearing thong.....he said he was hot.LOL.He was laughing too.I found it very funny.

Women wear thongs Wow!!! men wear thongs Arrrrrg! For me, I've go no problem with that as long as men don't have their flip flops dangling in front of them on the beach

That's precisely correct, tonymblack. Nobody wants to view visual pollution. The form of a beautiful young woman is a pleasing sight, to both men and women. Men, especially old men (and I am one), are not a pleasant sight and should be covered up, within reason based on the weather conditions. It's not so much the right of the individual to display themselves as it is the right of the rest of us not to become ill at the sight of some. Let's face it, some bodies are beautiful, others aren't. Just the way it is.
13:16 July 29, 2011 by jacquelinee

Got news for ya buddy. The form of a beautiful young MAN is a pleasing sight

to us modern women too. Whats good for the fellas is good for the ladies. You like to have a full view of a set of glands and a muscle group? Well so do we ... Get those green thongs out of storage guys and put the family jewels out on display for us ladies!

And any guy that thinks turn about is not fair play, may be just jealous and threatened by a substantially larger " package "
16:24 July 29, 2011 by TheWatchmen
The problem isn't that he was wearing a thong (which in itself is extremely revealing) but the yoga he was doing (which requires positions that may look obscene if done in say...in a thong!?). No one wants the image of some guys butthole barely covered up and in the air as part of their scenic view.
19:02 July 29, 2011 by waris
Since when swedish started to care? If ladies can go top less under sun in the parks then what could be wrong with the thong? I agree the complainer must be suffering from inferiority complex. I admire this mens courage to display what every one hides in public place :)
00:31 July 30, 2011 by Smallnose
The complainer was right. One should know the dress code at a nudist beach.

If it was a girl wearing a thong, this wouldn't be an issue. Equality in Sweden really does only favor women.....

" Equality in Sweden really does only favor women..... "

It certainly does when it has anything to do with baring your bits and pieces, but lets not talk about equal pay for equal work, promotions into higher positions etc. That is where the little boys club is still in full swing and women pretty much are not allowd to join the club. Women favored HA!
