The Social Democrats' new leader Stefan Löfven has been a major lift for his party. In less than a month, support for the Social Democrats has grown by 4.6 percentage points, the newest opinion poll from polling firm Sifo shows.

That translates into nearly 280,000 new supporters, wrote newspapers Göteborgs-Posten (GP) and Svenska Dagbladet (SvD).

The Left Party and the Sweden Democrats were the poll's biggest losers, having dropped 2.1 and 2.2 percentage units, respectively, and landing at 6.7 percent support for the Left Party and 4.7 percent for the Sweden Democrats.

Support for the governing centre-right alliance and the three left-wing parties in opposition is now very close. 48.3 percent backed the governing parties, and 46.4 percent favoured the opposition.

The Christian Democrats, who've suffered low results in the polls for some time now, once again slipped below 4 percent threshold the maintain representation in the Riksdag.

Among the left-wing opposition, the Social Democrats were the only party to advance in the polls, landing on 29.2 percent support.

This constitutes a major lift from this autumn's historically low support, but is still slightly below the 2010 election results.

The Green Party received 10.5 percent support according to the Sifo poll, dropping 1.3 percentage units from the last survey.

Within the centre-right alliance, matters remain largely unchanged. The Moderates stayed at 32.9 percent, the same result as the last poll.

The Centre Party landed on 5.1 percent, the Liberal Party (Folkpartiet) rose slightly and landed on 6.5 percent, and the Christian Democrats dropped to 3.8 percent.
