Sweden to give illegal immigrants healthcare

“So-called undocumented immigrants have a legal right to subsidized healthcare,” Christian Democrat head and social affairs minister Göran Hägglund said at a Thursday morning press conference unveiling the migration policy agreement.

The healthcare agreement will give undocumented immigrants who entered Sweden illegally the same rights currently offered to legal asylum seekers.

Children up to 18 years of age will have the right to health coverage. Adults will also receive subsidized care for conditions that require urgent medical attention.

Maria Ferm of the Greens thanked the government for the cooperation on the issue, which her party says was key to a previous pledge to work with the centre-right Alliance parties on a common immigration policy.

“Children and adults are getting an extended right to healthcare and I want to say thank you that we are able to ensure an important step in human rights. The right to healthcare is a human right,” she said.

The original goal of the Green party was to provide the same healthcare rights for undocumented immigrants as those with permanent residence permits in Sweden.

Although this goal won't be achieved, Green Party spokesperson Åsa Romson sees the proposal as a step in the right direction.

“This has been a really important reform for the undocumented immigrants to have confidence in Swedish healthcare and to be able to get care when they need it, and to be able to turn to the hospital and health clinics,” she said.

The biggest success, according to her, is that children under 18 will have the same rights as Swedish children.

This means that they will not only have the right to emergency care, but also to dentistry and preventive care.

However, there still remain details that the Green Party are working on improving.

Story continues below…

“There is, for example, undocumented immigrants’ right to education, which will be resolved shortly. But there will also be related to labour migration and the reunion of families,” Romson told TT.

I'm generously offering to anyone in the world a First Aid kit with free shipping. At the moment I have none but I'm very generous anyway :D
14:11 June 28, 2012 by prince T
@iraniboy. that is what you think. there are tens of thousand of them in the system. My line of work even allow me to meet them.

Most of them are actually working illegally (black) becuase they have no means of living. i bet you that the so called rich are exploiting them to the maximum becasue they have no rights. The police, immigration and the business people know them very well.

I think TL is delibrately feeding into the frenzies of the nazist on this forum. it is just a proposal and it does not mean we are going to accept it. I will personally not vote for it until I see how they are going to fund it. My beef is that most of this illegal immigrants works while the jobless nazists sit here all day venting their anger. they will flood this place soon. empty barrell make much noise
14:23 June 28, 2012 by Iraniboy
@prince T

I understand. I was just wondering how it is going to help or change anything for them when they are not supposed receive emergency service in the future anyway like many others.
14:24 June 28, 2012 by TG22
Well I think to be eligible for "undocumented" healthcare they should prove that they are in the country "undocumented", and for this to work well each hospital and clinic should also have an immigration officer 24/7 for when they declare "undocumented"...
14:30 June 28, 2012 by Iraniboy
@prince T

You should see other comments like the one concerning 'immigration rules for EU countries'. They are openly spreading racism here. Some of them were even suggesting to ban interracial relationships and kids. I think some of the comments posted here can be criminally liable based on Swedish law. However as far as I know many of these posters are not even in Sweden and they have never seen Sweden during their lifetime. They just happen to understand English.
14:36 June 28, 2012 by SimonDMontfort
Agree with prince T: the article IS stoking up anti-immigrant (illegal or otherwise) 'frenzies'. (Although it does carry the line "Adults will also receive subsidized care for conditions that require urgent medical attention")

I mean, consider a situation: somebody collapses in the street - surely ANY civilized country would give medical care to that person, regardless of whether s/he is here illegally or not?
14:39 June 28, 2012 by TG22
Right to healthcare, education, work, etc... All this for illegals... I think for the left Swedish immigration law should be changed to the follow:

- Requirements for residency in Sweden: None.

Just get your bum here lad and your are grand...

My daughter is currently visiting with a 3 months visitors visa. Has a South African passport but lives and works in any other country that will grant her a visa,. last place was teaching in China. Would love to leave the nomadic life live and settle Sweden with me but was denied permeanent residence. Maybe she should hide her passport and just stay. It seems to be so easy
15:48 June 28, 2012 by fakeempire
@jesseblu I am sorry to hear about your daughter. And yet they allow immigrants with criminal backgrounds into this country... but not your daughter. =/
15:52 June 28, 2012 by bourgeoisieboheme
Hmm, so if I lived in any other country in the world outside of Europe and I had cancer... I would hop a plane to Sweden. Score!
15:55 June 28, 2012 by Iraniboy

In Sweden there is no application for permanent resident permit. Someone who holds a resident permit(except students) for more than 4 years, automatically gets a permanent resident permit for the application for the fifth year.
15:59 June 28, 2012 by jesseblu
She was denied upperhålltsillstand. Went through the appeals process and so on. This was 2 years ago. Have things changed....I think not.
16:23 June 28, 2012 by Iraniboy
Now I understand! An Uppehålltsillstand just means a resident permit. It can be temporary or permanent. I think the requirements for resident permits are quite clear but they are extremely inflexible.
16:27 June 28, 2012 by CDRoth
Your country to do with as you (collectively) deem reasonable, but I must ask if this serves the best interests of your citizens?
16:33 June 28, 2012 by omansour
its just outrageous! they give ILLEGAL immigrants health care and DENY foreign researchers who spend many years in Sweden a permanent residence permits for some reason I don't and will never understand. There seems to be some kind of disease infecting legislators in Sweden who are part of such fantasies!!!!
17:10 June 28, 2012 by calebian22
They already have the right to healthcare. If you are in Sweden without a work permit or legal residence they don't turn you away at the hospital. It is cash on the barrel head though. At least it was for me, when I was coming here for extended visits before I moved here permanently. This is just free to the leeches and an added expense for the taxpayer. Stupid proposal, stupid Greens. SD 2014!
17:35 June 28, 2012 by CJ from Sunshine Desserts
How come an illegal immigrant can have a "legal right" to free healthcare ? Sweden is such a weird country ...from a legal point of view....oh well a few politicians will have a feel good feeling on themselves for the next weekend...who pays the 300 crowns for the ambulance ride ? the Swedish church ? they can sequester the income from Assanges book sales to fund it !
18:03 June 28, 2012 by RobinHood
There is no need for this. Illegal immigrants to Sweden who need emergency healthcare already have the option to report themselves to the police, who will provide the necessary standard of care. That creates a win/win. The illegal immigrant ceases to break the law, and receives the healthcare they need.

As for the Green party politicians, they need to make a decision. Do they represent the law abiding, tax paying citizens of Sweden, or do they prefer to represent those from elsewhere who are breaking the law?

If Green politicians prefer to represent citizens from elsewhere, I am sure there are some excellent parties in those countries in need of dynamic new party members from Sweden. Those that choose to stay in Sweden really should focus on fulfilling the many needs of the legitimate Swedish population before offering their time and our thin resources to people who are here illegitimately
18:04 June 28, 2012 by Russ Cobleigh
as a legal resident of Sweden, I am flabbergasted! Why should their health care come out of our taxes???
18:04 June 28, 2012 by cbgbg
Being illegal means illegal. I hope the police are at the surgeries to deport them
19:05 June 28, 2012 by mafketis
Apparently Göran Hägglund, Maria Ferm and Åsa Romson are morally bankrupt imbeciles who've never heard of the principle : you get more of what you reward.

The more attractive you make Sweden for people who break the law to get what they want the more people you'll have breaking the law.

As always, counter examples are welcome.
19:57 June 28, 2012 by Challie70
Just a proposal but as she said a step in the right direction for her party. If this was to pass with all the countries around fighting amongst themselves, killing their own...cool free medical and free money I know where I am going!

Just like every other country in Western Europe this country has also gone down the toilet.

Welcome to the last days of Europe!

Why should Sweden have so much "WHITE MAN'S BURDEN". Sweden has done almost zero colonialism yet it is as if we feel compelled to save the world for some reason. Sweden already gives away the most aid per capita in the world!!!!!!!!

Come on muslims isn't sweden the most RACIST country in the world!!!!!!!!

This country is EXTREME!!!!!!! These policies are the reason sweden goes down on UN human development index every year!!!!!!!!!!!

Just bring in tons of people who despise swedish values and think all swedish women are prostitutes

Let's destroy this racist country once and for all!!!!!!!!!!!

ALLAHU AKBAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!
22:10 June 28, 2012 by Radhus
I really don't understand what's new with this policy other than the fact it's free. Since these people don't contribute to the Swedish economy legally (i.e. pay taxes) then they shouldn't be getting subsidized healthcare. Yes, I know a lot of them work hard in "black" jobs, but why aren't they applying for legal status or why have their applications been rejected? Just because they work hard, doesn't make it right. They are only trying to make themselves look good by working. I bet those Greens had cotton wool on their eyes when they campaigned for this, yeah?

@Iraniboy/Prince T- You who are saying that this article shouldn't be printed b/c it stokes anti-immigrant comments is one of the dumbest things I've heard in a long time. So what you are in favor of is manipulating the media in order to portray an image of refugees/asylum seekers/illegal immigrants to the public. It's not enough that their names and pictures are left out when they commit a crime, now we have to omit the entire article. Seems that you two still don't have a clue what a free media is supposed to be all about.

You come here and argue that sweden should be colonized? And your colonists bring in their wake violence and crime and corruption and fear and strife and cruelty and poverty? Never have the government asked us swedes what we want in this, never has immigration been the biggest issue in any election, never did we hold a referendum on immigration. And still this colonisation has changed sweden more than anything ever in all our long long history. What right do you have to come here and call me a nazi for protesting against being colonized? What right do you have of calling me a nazi for protesting against the destruction of my people? What right do you have? Who are you and where do you come from? Why do you come here and destroy my country and my people?
23:06 June 28, 2012 by prince T
@joistein. You are the one that identified yourself as a nazist. I never called you one. I have a right to have a beef with nazist too. because i do not agree with your view, you already assume that i am an immigrant.

since you have identified yourself as a nazist, i want to say your brain is shallow and you do not belong in the civilized community. What you are and your group are doing is not going to stop anything or anybody. it will only escalate it.

saab, volvo, doctors and other professions have gone to immigrants while you are busy running your mouth here. you are lazy with no work to do and you have the gut to accuse hard working peple sustaining your economy to go back to their country. get a life my friend.

When you colonists have exterminated the last swede, who is a nazi then? I do not go to other countries and colonize them. I toil hard in my own country. Supporting both myself and the pensioners of today and the bleeding colonists like prince T, that somehow find the time to sit around and call for more colonisation of sweden and heavier taxburdens on the working swedes to support the colonists. He does this during work-hours AND calls other people layabouts. Disgusting.

what a TRAP!

And ABDUL RAHIM shows up at the hospital for treatment-- with a serious condition-- and he is cuffed to the bed during treatment. 3 DAYS LATER, HE IS DEPORTED TO... guess where? Does the word 'undocumented' ring any bell to start with? This is SWEDEN!

No free lunch, never will be!
00:24 June 29, 2012 by TheWatchman
I'm all on board if they deport them right after, but knowing that this is Sweden, they'll probably get free housing too. :l

I lol at Iraniboy and prince T and how they want to censor this website because our views differ from theirs. This is the internet, not some Islamic hellhole or North Korea. We can do what we want. We aren't Nazis, but we want Sweden to stay Swedish. That doesn't mean going around and killing non-white people, but if foreign immigrants are raping people and committing other crimes, why should they be given taxpayer money instead of the boot?

> Just get your bum here lad and your are grand...

But this worked for the 1.5 million Swedes who planted their bums down in USA and helped wipe out the Red Indians. Seems to me that Sweden can send home all the immigrants to their own countries if Sweden is prepared to welcome home their own 1.5 million emigrants plus their 42 million descendants,

"I am a swedeand "

That is hardly a mitigating circumstance.

As for your neighbours, creatures such as you never live in the mayhem you create. But you are happy to sacrifice other peoples children for your lofty ideals. More hipocracy in other words. Just like your dillydallying.

"I am paying my tax."

Just not during workhours, it would seem. Then you are busy calling for the colonization of the people that actually do work. And accusing them of NOT working. Your hypocracy is truly awinspiring.

I know an englishman - a.k.a. EU citizen - who is married to a Norwegian. The englishman has been denied a Personummer in Sweden - because he is married to a Norwegian.

There apparentlyy exists some law between Norway and Sweden which forbids this. (as indeed there is a Norwegian law which forbids the Norwegian wife of the Sweden living Englishman to drive their Sweden registered car in Norway!).

Not having a personummer means the englishman:

1. does not receive normal healthcare in Sweden

2. cannot even apply for a quotation from the UK to know how much UK pension he will receive.

3.has no rights in Sweden - even as an EU citizen!

So before all you right-wingers get off on foreign nationals flooding the country (as you yourself did in the great Swedish emigration in the 1800's), just know that they are some very genuine cases that get trapped in the rule quagmire!

At least Sweden will not permit someone's death through illness/accident by denying them healthcare. Be proud of this.It is the sign of a civilised society.
09:52 June 29, 2012 by hpunlimited
The Swedish government is totally retarded!

This means ANYONE in the world can come to sweden illegally or as a tourist(and not show passport) and get free healthcare services like any hardworking taxpaying swedish citizen would get. I think my next business idea is to set up at travel agency in the USA and offer FREE HEALTHCARE, just pay your airline ticket and get your $200.000 open heart surgery for free.

I wonder why Obama is even bothering in the USA with his healthcare reforms, just tell all the Americans to go to the Swedish embassy.

Watchman, godnatt,...

Go ahead! I'm all for freedom of speech but If your version of freedom of speech that you are fiercely endorsing here was maintained during 1950s then probably many of us couldn't come to existence! I know you don't feel the danger now since you think you don't belong to current group of racial victims. But I'm just saying what goes around comes around!
10:15 June 29, 2012 by Paul_225
Can we agree that there are people who's lives will depend on it, and there are people who will leech and milk and exploit the system for all it's worth? Personally I don't think illegals are entitled to anything except swift deportation. Sweden has no obligation to house persona non grata.
11:23 June 29, 2012 by Dave N
How many millions of people in Africa have HIV/AIDS? This act of sheer folly will bring them swarming to Sweden like wasps to a pot of jam. How very odd it is to watch a nation quite deliberately committing suicide.
13:27 June 29, 2012 by Marc the Texan
Yes Swedish politicians never seem to understand the concept of unintended consequences. The cost/benefit for new arrivals to favor illegal status in Sweden seems like it will soon be more favorable than going the legal route. I'd advise any Americans who have costly medical expenses and no insurance to watch this space. If this goes through get over here fast.

I have emailed Tobias Billström, the Minister responsible for Immigration asking pertinent questions about the government's immigration policy. Despite several hasteners I have not received a reply. I recently travelled with 24 Swedes, none of whom I had met before. Only one supported the current immigration policy, four were non-commital, but the remainder were against it. This new decision left them all speechless!
22:45 June 29, 2012 by samwise
If health care service is deemed as a human right, then you have to cover it for anybody living here I guess. The government can't violate people's human rights. But I don't believe it is.

Poster # 48 - We in the U.S. will no longer be rushing there, we now have Obama care plus the fact that obama doesn't care who comes across the boarders now, free housing, welfare, medical, free education free lunches at school for all illegals, not to mention they are taking work away from out of work Americans, and all the illegals benefits come from American tax payers. Not only are we allowing illegals by the droves to enter our Country, our politicians are allowing thousands and thousands a month to come in legally, and most do not benefit our society and never will, pretty soon there will not be enough people working to support those who are not working. All immigrants should come to the U.S., our politicians will change all the rules to accommodate them.

14:44 June 30, 2012 by Trace33
bcterry.....I watched this video a few days back, and this is what I am getting to, nothing what so ever was done to restrain the muslim's from throwing objects and hitting the Christians that were there, the Police removed the Christians who never contributed to any violence or threats, there are now no go zones in Dearborn and are patrolled by muslims, this is a disgrace and our weak Politicians allow it, any thing to get votes, they violate our Constitution accommodate illegal aliens against the will of the people.
15:33 June 30, 2012 by VoodooDingy
Has it ever occurred to some of you that giving healthcare to people is a matter of humanity and human decency? There is no excuse for turning away someone who's in desperate need of medical treatment!

Now, if a large number of people are entering Sweden illegally because they can't afford healthcare, or are denied medical treatment in their home countries - for whatever reasons - who can blame them? If someone told you that you had cancer and that without appropriate treatment you would die within a matter of months, and at the same you realized that you don't have any chance of treatment at home, wouldn't you do whatever it takes to get medical treatment?

I conjecture that illegal immigrants will have to turn themselves in, in order to get medical treatment in the first place. After that, most of them will probably be deported back.

However, entering the country illegally is an infringement of Swedish sovereign territory, i.e. a criminal offence, and subject to prosecution according to the Swedish constitution! Therefor, this resolution is most likely unconstitutional.

What angers me most is that this is being imposed on Swedish taxpayers! I am not prepared to pay taxes to support illegitimate resolutions by socialist-green tax-despots.
15:36 June 30, 2012 by bcterry
@ Trace33,

And obama was there sucking up to, and SUPPORTING them.

Somebody in N.A. better get a fxxxing grip on the reality of islam pretty damn soon, or this kind of sxxx we are seeing in Deerborn will catch fire elsewhere if they are allowed to get away with what we see in the video, and are not firmly put in their place, .......... NOW!!!

Obama just called Mursi, the new muslim brotherhood president of Egypt and offered his congratulations.

22:47 June 30, 2012 by Trace33
bcterry.....You are right, and we now have individuals visiting the WH on a regular basis that are or have been members of the muslim brother hood.

Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) criticized the FBI on Monday for removing nearly 900 pages of training material it deemed to be offensive, saying it showed extremist Muslim groups were influencing national strategy.

Untill obama is out of the WH this is not going to change.
