A former police officer has been cleared of sexual molestation after explaining to the court that claims of having masturbated in front of a woman were unfounded and in fact he was just attempting to deal with a troublesome itch.

The woman had reported to the police that on four occasions in November 2012 she had passed the man's house when he had exposed himself and masturbated, according to a report in the local Smålandsposten daily.

The woman explained that she was obliged to pass the man's house on her way to and from school to pick up her kids.

During court proceedings at Växjö district court, the woman described how the naked ex-cop stood in clear view at his front window and appeared to play with himself.

The prosecutor presented two items of video evidence of the man's actions, recorded by the woman's partner.

On one of the occasions the man is suspected of having directed a strong lamp towards himself rendering him more visible to passers-by in the street.

The man explained the use of the lamp in that he was expecting building workers, adding that he often walked around naked at home.

He furthermore explained that any conspicuous rummaging in his crotch area could be explained by a troublesome itch that needed scratching.

The district court freed the accused on the basis that it couldn't be proved that his actions were directed at the woman in question.
