What's on in Sweden: March 12th - 19th
It's time to pick Sweden's Eurovision entry, so why not throw a Euro pop themed party this weekend? If that's not your style, there's also a French-Finnish indie pop gig, a Star Wars exhibition and a touching Somali concert to choose from.
This weekend millions of Swedes will gather in front of television screens in their homes, with their friends in bars or even live in Stockholm as the curtains go up on Melodifestivalen – the competition to choose Sweden's entry to the Eurovision Song Contest – at 8pm on Saturday.
Around 28,000 people are expected to head to Friends Arena to watch the twelve entries battle it out live for the chance to represent Sweden in Vienna later this year. But for those of you not lucky enough to get tickets, hit the bars or clubs where you live to see if they will be showing the music feast on big screens. And if you're feeling anti-social, there's always television.
As much as The Local loves Melodifestivalen, it is not always a parade of the hippest acts in town. So for the more discerning music fans among you, we recommend a gig by up-and-coming French-Finnish indie pop band The Dø.
Riding on the waves of success after just having released their third album, Shake Shook Shaking, Olivia Merilahti and Dan Levy are set to play Debaser Strand, Stockholm, on Friday, March 13th. Tickets are sold at 165 kronor each.
If you're heading to the west coast this week, visit a Star Wars inspired exhibition you must. 'Art Wars Sweden', a series of artworks based on Star Wars' Stormtroopers and running until March 29th, sees Swedish artists Charlotte Gyllenhammar, Makode Linde, Carl Michael von Hausswolff and many more interpret George Lucas' universe at art centre 3:e Våningen at Gothenburg harbour.
The exhibition was first shown at world famous Saatchi Gallery in London, welcoming artists such as Damien Hirst, Jake and Dinos Chapman and Joana Vasconcelos.
Meanwhile, in southern Sweden, politics meets music as one of eastern Africa's greatest singers is set to enchant audiences with her spellbinding voice.
Sahra Halgan is taking her Europe wide tour to Malmö to bring the traditions of Somaliland – a small area in northern Somalia seeking independence – alive in song. The concert takes place on Wednesday, March 18th, and tickets cost between 90 and 150 kronor.
Ready to laugh until your stomach aches? One of the UK's funniest comedian is heading to Sweden next month. Award-winning comic Al Murray is bringing his character The Pub Landlord to Rival, Stockholm, on April 13th. Tickets are likely to go quickly, so be sure to snap yours up now.
