March 30: Women’s Access to Justice in Iran (Stockholm)

Sahar Maranlou, University of Oxford

Iranian justice system faces various challenges that consist of issues such as inadequate, long and discriminatory remedies, a lack of gender sensitisation, failure to protect the poor and marginalised groups, or a lack of transparency and accountability. My socio-legal research focuses on Iranian women’s access to justice and barriers they face in their path to justice. Based on my findings of a survey study on the perceptions of Iranian women about justice, I will talk about Iranian women's basic legal knowledge, their familiarity with legal procedure, perceptions of cultural barriers, issues that influence their preference for mechanisms of formal or alternative dispute solutions, and their level of satisfaction with their chosen courses of action.
