41-year-old Jonas Buud - previously four times runner-up - finally won the world 100km ultrarunning championship in the Netherlands on Saturday afternoon.

The Swede hit the front after 80km and, on the 10km park and urban course in Winschoten, steadily ran away from the field, finishing a remarkable 13 minutes ahead of the Spanish runner, Asier Cuevas.

Buud's time of 6.22.44 smashed his own Swedish and Nordic record by more than six minutes.
