In January, The Local Sweden's Book Club is kicking off the year by reading a classic Swedish love story, The Serious Game by Hjalmar Söderberg.

Written in 1912 by one of the country's best known writers, The Serious Game follows the story of a man and woman who fall for each other at a young age. Their love lasts through the years, but that's not enough for them to be together, and they both end up marrying other people. Decades later, can they rekindle the passion of their youth?

Gender roles, the class system and women's rights have evolved over the past decade, as of course has the city of Stockholm which plays an important role as the setting of much of the book. But what lessons of the novel are still applicable today? We'll find out and will be discussing in our Book Club Facebook group.

We would also appreciate it if you could answer seven quick questions about the Book Club if you've taken part in any way so far, so that we can keep it going and improve it in 2020. Everyone who responds to our survey will receive a 50 percent discount on Membership of The Local as a thank you. Click here for the five-minute survey.
