Sweden has vowed to update its recommendations on foreign travel every two weeks. Here are the dates.

The Swedish foreign ministry earlier this months lifted its advice against non-essential travel to 14 countries in Europe, as they opened their borders to Swedes. But some unclarity has remained, for example Greece which initially indicated that it would start allowing flights from Sweden but then changed its restrictions.

Sweden has now said that in order to give travellers a chance to plan the foreign ministry will update its international travel recommendations on the following dates: July 15th, July 29th and August 12th.

"We want to make it as clear and simple as possible for travellers to make well-founded decisions. Our intention is also to communicate possible changes to the recommendations before these dates. I also want to underline that the foreign ministry is always able to quickly make decisions on other occasions if the situation requires it," said Foreign Minister Ann Linde in a statement on Thursday.

Swedes are currently able to travel freely – as far as the foreign ministry's recommendations go – to 14 countries (here's the full list) but advice against non-essential travel to the rest of the world remains in place.

The guidance has been in place since an early stage in the pandemic, due to global uncertainty and travel bans. The foreign ministry's advice against non-essential travel is not a legally binding ban, but has other implications, for example that your travel insurance may not be valid if you disregard the advice.

The recommendation is linked to travel restrictions and the fast-changing global situation, which could leave travellers stranded, rather than infection risks posed directly by the coronavirus itself.

For that reason, the countries exempted from the advice are generally countries without restrictions, such as mandatory quarantines, for Swedes who travel there. The key word is 'generally'; there may be exceptions.

If you travel to one of these countries, you still need to make sure that you are aware of any coronavirus-related regulations still in place, for example local travel restrictions or rules such as the use of a face mask.

Swedish vocabulary

face mask – (ett) munskydd (the literal translation of face mask is ansiktsmask, but Swedes generally refer to them as munskydd, which literally means mouth protection)

the foreign ministry – utrikesdepartementet

traveller – (en) resenär

flight – (ett) flyg
