I've got a job offer in UK and HR department have sent me a set of forms to fill (before I start in 3 months time) so that they can proceed with setting me up in their payroll system etc.

In it I see that I have to give a NI number and a bank account number.
I would really appreciate if any of you from UK (or who have been working there) could answer the below questions, so that I can get an idea of how I should proceed with this.

1. Can I apply for a NI number in UK while I'm still in Sweden ?
2. Can I apply for a UK bank account while I'm in still Sweden ?
( Will proof of UK address hamper the above since I don't have a UK address as of yet.)

about 10 years back I was studying in UK and I did have a NI number back then as I did a student job. Will I be able to use it (if I can find it rolleyes.gif ) Unfortunately I will not be able to use my old bank accounts since I closed them when I left UK after the studies.

Im not sure about the NI no. ... if you have your old one somewhere or can find an old payslip/tax form with it on then Im sure its still good... they dont go out of date.. I dont think...

To get a bank account you will probably need to visit one... I know Lloyds have an easy system and you can get a debit card pretty quick.. you dont have to be English. Im sure Barkleys as well, but again, Im certain you need to go and see them and probably have someone else with you whos English and has a proof of THEIR address

Speak to the Department of Work and Pensions to retrieve your NI number.

You will need to visit a bank in person, as they will want to see various id's these days, and make sure you are a real person. It may still be tricky though, as you won't have much to show them, and won't be on the electoral roll.

To get a NI number you need to book yourself in for an interview. It's not urgent but you should do it as soon as you can.

What will happen then is described here:

When I arrived in the UK in the late 1990s the guy who interviewed me said I could make my own number up while I waited, as long as I let them know what the number was when I got a proper one. They would then correct the details on their side.

I doubted then as much as I do now that that was the case, but it might be good to know. The info pages certainly doesn't mention anything about it.

Good luck with the new job. Any other questions you have let me know.

PS! It also has on there how to retrieve your old number (didn't read all that when I wrote the above)
