Water damage or could not use the shower etc? Which was it?

Was it in a house or a rented flat?

Usually once damage has already been done you can't change companies and expect them to pay out!

why would they tell you to turn on the water?
I can see them asking you to turn off the water to not make more damage.
If your problem is dirty water then just run it for a while and it will clear out unless you got something wrong with you pipeline into the house.
