Hej girls!
Im a real newbie in this subject, my bf has always used condoms before but since we are living together now I really want to switch to some other birth control method. I have heard many negative things about the patches and even the new nuvaring, therefore I decided for the pill. I know that some people say they have gained weight with the pills and I was wondering what is your experience with it, but the most important: Which pill do you recommend me to buy and what's the average price? Thank you for any comments or advices! |

You cannot just walk into Apoteket an buy the contraceptive pill - you need a prescription - so really it's something to talk over with your doctor as there are many different factors of your medical history etc to take into account before deciding which one to prescribe

Make an appointment at barnmorska, your local vårdcentral should be able to help you. Pills are pretty cheap it's a few hundred KR for an entire year supply.
BUT I would insist upon your boyfriend (and you) getting STI tested. STIs are rife in Sweden and the world and often don't show any symptoms. Swedes are more often than not very naive when it comes to sexual health, when I was a single girl I was getting tested every 6 months and when I asked my BF to get tested, at age 26 he had NEVER had one. Without going into TMI land I am very very glad I insisted upon it. It's just a respect thing. |

Price is not an issue in Sweden. They are all more or less the same price anyway. You need to make an appointment with your local doctor. Discuss it with your doctor. Your doctor will be able to give you the pros and cons. The doctor will also be able to give you a prescription and monitor your health if need be. |

If you are under 20/25 (depending on where you live) you can get contraceptive advice from the ungdomsmottagning (Youth Healthcare Centre)

Thank you for the responses!
I will go to the doctor for the tests and the prescription, I know I cant simply buy them but I was wondering how did you girls feel when you started to take hormones and which pill suits you good (so I can check the components and ask my doctor if its ok for me) And have you gained weight cause of the pill? |

For me, I like taking the pill because I have PCOS and it illeviates nearly all of the problems I have associated with that disorder. As for weight gain, I think it's a bit of a myth. Usually what happens is you get a boyfriend and you eat more cake =) I first started taking it when I was 16, I weighed about 75kgs (I am 173cm so that is on the top limit of what I should weigh for my height) and probably lost about 3kgs over the next year. About a year and half later my boyfriend moved in with me and I gained like 15kgs. So I would definitely say no, in my experience the pill does not cause weight gain, but boyfriends do so look out for that!

Each person is different and each response to a drug is different. For example, if I take anything premarin based, I put on a massive belly very quickly, yet anything estradiol 17B based I am OK. I can't take anything with a progestin in it as I react badly, yet natural progesterone is perfect for me. As I said everyone is different, that is why I suggested to see your local doctor. |

I have to say that pills as bad as patches or nuvarings. Someone must have misinformed you. They all have similar doze of hormones which is considered to be bad for you. But when you are faced with an option being pregnant or getting some hormones, then you choose hormones. The only exception in pills is a mini-pill that has a very low doze of hormones. The Swedish doctor refused to prescribe me a patch (which I used for 5 years) when they found my blood pressure to be a bit high once. So they gave me two options: either a mini-pill or IUD. So I chose a mini-pill. I am using Cerazette right now and you must take it every day at the same hour. I have an alarm on my cell to remind me because otherwise, I could never remember myself. I think it's a good contraceptive but of course, as many of them they have side effects. Mine are that I lost my periods altogether but most importantly, recently I got terrible acne and I read online that it was one of the possible side effects as well. But these really differ among women. So perhaps I will ask for other type of mini-pill next time. I am sure they all are similar but I don't think that I am ready for IUD. Good luck with your choice! Hi.
I was using jasminelle, but there is also non harmonal copper ring. However, i am thinking in the future to use the technology that identifies fertile days in order not to use any pill or ring. Because I believe they all are bad all together for our body. But talk to barnmorska (midwife) about your concerns and she can advice you better. Good luck! |
