The Local _ Norrland _ People in Umeå

Posted by: Blue 8.Oct.2006, 09:18 PM

I'm 22 year old girl from Poland living in Umeå. I'd like to meet some people who I can speak english or polish with since my swedish isn't so good, just for a "fika" in some cafe or walk in town or something. I'm free most of the time.

Posted by: jim747 8.Oct.2006, 09:35 PM

Can you wait 8 months?

I'll be heading to Umeå next June, residency permit allowing!

Posted by: Mzungu In Za. 8.Oct.2006, 09:42 PM

Too rudy cold in Umeå...1000 odd km., south and you will enjoy plenty of "Fika's"

Posted by: Ems 8.Oct.2006, 09:52 PM

The cold doesn't really matter too much when your sat at "båten" having a nice warm cup of coffee and looking out over the frozen river. Best café in town, or it used to be at least.

Can't sit in the cafe´all night, one has to go home to that nice snug warm bed...that's when the brass monkey takes hold.

Rubbish! Try Umeå in the summer, no better place to be! Plenty of fika's to enjoy. Just thinking of Kanelbullar makes my mouth water!! Can't wait to go out on a snow scooter in the winter and have a BBQ Too!

Posted by: Ems 9.Oct.2006, 10:40 PM

I'm getting homesick..

Posted by: jim747 9.Oct.2006, 10:47 PM

Really? Why? Where are you and where are you origionally from?

I have July 2000, for a week en-route. Between 11/18C, and around a foot of rain, that's Summer time.
Winter, make that 10,000km South.

In Småland, from Umeå-ish

Posted by: jim747 9.Oct.2006, 11:01 PM

OK I'll give you that one, The summer of 2000 was the worst in Swedish history, I was there for 5 months, it pissed down almost the whole time, I thought I was in Scotland. I remember watching the news and there was a house floating down the river, mental!

Hale from Småland.. little south of Jönköping...great place,no traffic lights even. 8)

Posted by: Ems 9.Oct.2006, 11:09 PM

Ah, I remember that one. Saw someone with a house by a river near Sundsvall canoeing around their garden. Looked a bit odd.

My granddad reckons the summer of 2004 is the worst one he's seen in his 80-odd year long life though.

Posted by: jim747 9.Oct.2006, 11:11 PM

OK, now I understand. I'm not surprised you miss Umeå, I love the place. I'll be about 2Mil from Ume.

Lovely place to pass a driving test then smile.gif

I went to Jönköping last spring and it took aaages to get there. Småland's too big for it's own good.. I think.

Posted by: jim747 9.Oct.2006, 11:15 PM

Isn't Småland where the film "Mitt Liv Som Hund" is based or at least filmed, looks nice on my dvd!

Don't believe we are much of a help to poor "Bluey".

Thinks she's done a runner anyhow.

Posted by: Ems 9.Oct.2006, 11:23 PM

I love that film!! In fact, last year I bought Expressen for the first time in my life only because they gave away the dvd for free. It was just as fantastic as I remembered it, if not more. Don't think I ever got around to reading the paper.

I believe most of it was filmed in the "glasriket" area of Småland. Haven't really explored the area myself but it looks nice on my dvd too smile.gif

Just about the opposite direction to where I'm from then (Holmsund).

Edited due to overusage of the word "cool". Not quite sure what happened there.

At least we're keeping the thread alive until someone who is actually in Umeå comes along.

Posted by: jim747 9.Oct.2006, 11:29 PM

My mates mother-in-law lives in Holmsund, Iv'e been a couple of times, had a nice walk round the bay area and I remember climbing up a ski-lift or something like that, there was a nice view from the top, that's about all I remember.

It's been dark in Umeå for around 7hrs.
Don't believe there's that much night activity on a Monday...all in bed.
We are in for an extended wait.

Aah, the old watch tower at Omberget. I dragged my sambo up there once in the middle of winter but he didn't like it much as the stairs were quite steep and the tower was creaking a lot. When I lived there my friend and I used to climb up there all the time to have a cigarette away from our parents. Those were the days..

Posted by: Loke 10.Oct.2006, 10:54 AM

EMS - Båten's ok, but Schmäck is far and away the best fika in town.

Do I win a prize for being an Umebo?

Posted by: Ems 10.Oct.2006, 07:39 PM

Yes, you win a date with Blue!

Not familiar with Schmäck, whereabouts is it?

Not sure the sambo'd be too happy about that...

Kungsgatan (gågatan), on the corner opposite Frukthörnan and on the other side of the road (roughly) from the Saga Theatre.

You still in Umeå, Blue?

My 21-year-old English wife will probably welcome some new friends!! We live just over an hour's drive north of Umeå in some godforesaken industrial hole called Skellefteå and we sometimes pop down to Umeå just to remember what a city looks like - oh and to stuff our faces with Subway sandwiches!!

Posted by: jim747 2.Oct.2007, 04:38 PM

Not trying to make you jealous or anything Jim, but I read in the paper lately they were opening a 2nd Subway in Umeå at the end of last week!! laugh.gif

And if we didn't scare Blue away then let us know if you are still in Umeå.

Posted by: Griffaluba 5.Dec.2007, 04:52 PM

I'm in Umeå and will be for at least the next 3 years - so if you want to meet up you just have to give me a shout, after christmas would be best as I have rather alot on my plate at the moment.

Posted by: Kaylo 5.Dec.2007, 06:13 PM

Next year works for me too - going home for Christmas, yippee...

Posted by: jim747 5.Dec.2007, 07:12 PM

That goes for me too, i'm heading home on saturday for a week or so to catch up with friends and family and go n see some footie! But next month is better for me if we all want an Ume meet up! biggrin.gif

Posted by: Griffaluba 5.Dec.2007, 07:32 PM

Sounds good to me! My e-mail is griffaluba at hotmail dot com if you want to drop me a line. Haven't been out much the past couple of months, so it would be good to have the chance to drink a beer... or two smile.gif

Posted by: Kaylo 13.Feb.2008, 11:15 PM

Anyone up for making "Team Umeå" happen anytime soon?
Pick a date - Subway seems like a popular place to start...

Posted by: Griffaluba 14.Feb.2008, 08:07 AM

How about next week, any evening after Tuesday?

Posted by: jim747 14.Feb.2008, 09:57 AM

Sounds great to me, count me in. Just pick a day and a time and i'll see what I can do.

Posted by: Kaylo 14.Feb.2008, 09:54 PM

Griffaluba says after Tuesday. I can't do Wednesday next week but could Thursday or Friday.
Jim?

Posted by: Ems 15.Feb.2008, 05:54 AM

Hey, if it's next week even I can attend! Not that I'm in the team anymore as such, but still.

Posted by: jim747 15.Feb.2008, 10:44 AM

Thursday or Friday are good for me.

How about you Griff?

Ems, that would be great, I take it you are home visiting family!

Where the hell is Roch? Hope she reads this in time!

Posted by: Griffaluba 15.Feb.2008, 11:09 AM

Thursday is the best day for me. I don't have any plans that day so can meet up any time during the day/evening.

Posted by: Kaylo 15.Feb.2008, 02:14 PM

Thursday evening down town, works for me...

Posted by: jim747 15.Feb.2008, 04:08 PM

Yep, that sounds good to me!

Time and place?

Posted by: Kaylo 16.Feb.2008, 02:43 PM

Eenie meenie minie mo... Does somebody have to be decisive? It's only taken us 18 months since poor Blue's first post to get this far...

Lotta's 18:30?
(I don't usually finish work until around 6).

Posted by: jim747 16.Feb.2008, 03:23 PM

Ok Done! See you there.

Posted by: Holecutter > The Howl From Hell 16.Feb.2008, 03:30 PM

Umeå sounds like some mechanism in the anal passage, does it actually exist ? other than stuck in a deep dark place.

Maybe Roch will be tempted if I say I'll let her in on a secret for aurora predictions?

Posted by: roch 17.Feb.2008, 12:56 PM

hey hey where and what is lottas? biggrin.gif not 100% sure i can make it but will try...

Posted by: Griffaluba 17.Feb.2008, 01:04 PM

Lottas is a pleasant little pub in the centre of town with good food and good beer. Here's a map

Hey hey... without going into detail on this forum... i would love to meet you all and catch up again with you jim, but its looking dodgy at the moment. Will let you know closer to the time... short story is my sambo dad is sick.

If I don't see you.. I will make the next one! biggrin.gif

Okey Dokey Roch, was looking forward to a chinwag, haven't seen you in months!

Hope the old man is better soon.

Posted by: jim747 21.Feb.2008, 04:27 PM

Yep, i'll be there!

Posted by: Griffaluba 21.Feb.2008, 04:53 PM

Posted by: jim747 21.Feb.2008, 11:38 PM

Well, that was fun, nice meeting more Locallers!!

Posted by: Griffaluba 21.Feb.2008, 11:56 PM

I agree - I had a good time and didn't slur once, not even after 2 pints!

Posted by: Kaylo 22.Feb.2008, 08:54 AM

Unanimous then.
I humbly suggest we plan ahead for maybe March 13 for the next one (a week before Easter).
K

Posted by: jim747 22.Feb.2008, 09:53 AM

Have taken note, hope the others are clear for that date too.

Posted by: Griffaluba 23.Feb.2008, 02:37 PM

Sorry, been a bit busy. Have also made a note of the date and look forward to seeing you again. Hopefully one or two others will also be able to join us.

Posted by: Kaylo 8.Mar.2008, 09:01 AM

Still up for Thursday 13th? Any suggestions for time and place?

*Hope you can make it this time Roch - need your help to redress the gender imbalance...

Posted by: roch 8.Mar.2008, 09:32 AM

I'm in... but have little cash... so maybe I will come after dinner??? (no job and trying to make savings stretch out as far as possible)...

But this Thursday is good...I am not really up with the where to go part as have been pretty much studying and hibernating this winter! biggrin.gif

Posted by: jim747 8.Mar.2008, 10:46 AM

Wouldn't worry about the dinner bit, Kaylo was the only one who had anything to eat last time!

We could go for the same place and time if you want to, Lottas at 18.30 unless anyone wants to change venue.

Posted by: roch 8.Mar.2008, 12:05 PM

Is there a car park there? Or would I have to park in one of the building in town and walk? Or would it be easier to take the bus? biggrin.gif

Posted by: Griffaluba 8.Mar.2008, 12:24 PM

Lottas at 18.30 it is then smile.gif.

Roch, the nearest car park is on magasingatan, roughly a two minute walk from Lottas.

See you all there!

As I recall we each nursed one drink through about two hours last time!
Not sure whether I'll eat this time, depends if I finish work in time to go home first.
See you all Thursday at Lotta's.
