Merit Rating Bachelor's 2017

Chances of getting accepted ?

Hi everyone!

I applied to Lund University and Stockholm University this year for their Social Science programs and have been compulsively checking the university admissions website since it is February and I am getting impatient. The only thing I can see is my merit ranking, and though they say to not try to interpret it, I'm quite curious what chances I have with mine. For both programs I got a 22,5 ranking out of a possible maximum of 22,5. I have read several threads but cannot find any that have the same stats, so I'm posting a separate one. Lund is my top school and I have wanted to go there for 3 years now. In your opinion, what are my chances with this merit ranking???

Thanks to all who reply & good luck!! 2 months to go sad.gif

Hi TigaChunga...I wouldn't worry just yet. You applied to many programs so I think you have a chance of getting in somewhere...The merit ranking is confusing and people with low rankings have gotten in the past. It says the "higher the ranking the greater your chance" but it is hard to tell what goes on in admissions. We will just have to wait and see! Are you applying for bachelor's studies?

Hey man. I'd say you have a perfect chance of getting in. I don't see why you are worried? I mean.. congrats on these grades! They are superb. I checked the statistics, no where does it require such high grades, the MAX is usually around 21 something, and that is for medicine. The only thing that could hold you back would be:
- not having submitted all data
- bad motivation letter perhaps
- not meeting the subject requirements...
I can think of no problem other than that
I have a merit rating of 18,54/22.50 (BI) and I think I have a fair chance of getting into International Economics in Jönköping. If anyone can help me out there, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Cheers

Hey man,

I wouldn't worry if I were you. Doesn't help. Also, do you have BI or BII, because that makes a difference. I cannot find statistics for University West, but Malmö seems quite difficult to get in. European Studies might take you, tho. University West might be easier to get in. So you have a good chance there, too. Anyhow, if nothing works, consider resitting exams or applying to a different European uni? Norwegian, for example, takes students with 20/45 IB points, I once read. Was too late to apply sad.gif That would be a worthy shot, don't you think?
All the best man, and I am sure you will get in to a uni. Just keep up the work.
Cheers

Hi unknown 55,

I was so nervous but since it appears you have researched some statistics I appreciate your input. I applied for bachelor's studies so there was no motivation letter required and I did not get a message that I am missing any documents. Technically, the merit ranking is supposed to be an abstract number that shouldn't be interpreted, but how can you not?? It's so tempting..fingers crossed for us all!!

Hi!
I was wondering if someone here could tell me about the new merit rating system?

My first MR was 18.5 and now it's 14.9 (it changed a few days ago) i'm so confused 'cause i don't know how this affects for my chance to get in. I've applied to umeå university to study molecular biology.

I also sent an e-mail to university admission but haven't got an answer yet

Oh, that's weird! I checked my account after reading your post and I saw that my points got lowered too – from 18.6 to 18.25 (possibly they've rounded something down, but why not 18.5 then?)

I'm generally a master's applicant, but as I'm trying to change my field, I'm prepared to study computer science on a bachelor's level for a year or so to get more required credits.
It's a bit weird to me that the rating isn't higher though, as I had really good grades in high school, all final exams passed on the advanced level, and then I have those courses in math, physics, etc. passed with highest grades on a university level; what do they need for 22.5 then!? I tried to read about selection groups, but it's very confusing wink.gif

I thought that only applied to the masters applicants.. and even with that it was supposed to go higher not lower.. well im from outside the EU so I wouldn't know how that works. University admissions are going to take a while before they reply. The universities themselves reply way faster.. i hope its just an error.. because from 18 to 14 is terrible.. it shouldn't change that much.. makes me wonder me, who already has a 16 rating, if i was going to be downgraded.. lool.. dont stress too much tho.. a few weeks more.. we will all be fine.. going to do a little more research and your situation tho. Because i have no idea

And from the link you posted, looks like their lowering foreign high school diplomas so they can be equal to the Swedish diplomas.. because the claim the people with Swedish diplomas are not having a fair assessment.. well i might be wrong tho

Yea actually i did some research and my new MR (14.9) is calculated right, according to their new system so it's not a mistake or anything. They are really making it harder for foreign students to get in.
But do i still have a chance, i mean if it's this much harder for people applying from Finland it must be as much harder for people applying anywhere else than from Sweden, right? This is just me trying to think if there's a hope or not
