The local has been a wonderful site with a lot of information over the past 7 years and with the forum being helpful to a lot of people.

However, it is tough to make ends meet now and especially if you want people to pay for quality journalism. I mean if the big sites in US and UK struggle you can imagine how much harder it is for a company such as thelocal.

Still I will miss this place once it does get shutdown. If there is one person I miss the most it is puffin who helped a lot with advice in early 2009 and thereabouts. Hope puffin is doing well wherever she is.

Amen on Puffin, she was the crown jewel of TheLocal...

But why are people giving up on the site???

I don't understand the idea that TheLocal is finished just because they want to charge for the service they provide...just like others do...

Since when does that mean the end for any enterprise???

False document spams now. I sent a message via their Facebook side giving them details. No reply. Maybe James Savage has met Flaneur and they are buggering.

RIP TL

@Savage - as Puffin left in 2013, how do you know that as you joined in 2016? Same question to wondering_again - joined in 2014.

I understand the Local putting up a paywall, but this won't work for the most of the crap that is currently published. Readers can be surprisingly mean even if it's 1€ a month, if the content is not interesting or obviously biased.

I subscribe to FT, NYT and WashPost - and each of these delivers the occasional article that is really insightful. I am not so interested in politics and copy and paste from Reuters etc. Or the FT especially has commenters who at times really deliver.

The subscription model is a tough one, because we have all done this and not used the service only to remember a year later we wasted money. Like gym contracts.

I do think there is a space for the Local, but as a service for English speaking expats. Too many stories are trivial - there needs to be an edgier journalism. And we need to know stuff that only someone who has lived in Sweden for 10 years understands. i.e. more of a service.

The forum needs to be better organised, like toytowngermany.com - where useful informative posts are always available in a separate group. It's tedious to keep reading the same questions. And perhaps this would encourage more debate, meet up groups, etc.

What was/is, your motivation to take the time to research a members last posts???

Or is the database of TheLocal an open book to you as you have previously stated...

I have challenged you before to send me my database info privately, in particular my IP address, etc..

You have also mentioned that you know who/what posters here are known by different names...

It's time for you to prove yourself...

If you cannot, than just go away!!!

There is a new EU law that starts in May next year that will force all websites that collect personal data to offer the option to remove this - this data would include all posts, server logs, website analytic tools that collect IP address, etc. It is possible that the costs to implement this will force the closure of this forum.

The spam button:

It still does not work, but the spam is "Soft core" spam that probably would not be removed, had the button been working...

Maybe they are reverting to the "old" way...

Maybe a "Hard core" filter has been added...

Any thoughts???

I never have and never will pay to use a website. Most free websites get their income through advertising, annoying as this is to users but is a necessity in order to keep it a free service. The only person inconvenienced is the end user really, and as long as advertisements are not they key feature of the site then users will continue to use the site.

Although I have been a user of this site on and off for over a decade, I would say that I don't use it enough to justify paying to use it so I for one will not be back if that were the case.

Yes I think it is a useful site, especially for those who are new to the country and finding their feet or for those looking for specialist help and need help.

When I first started using this site the people on here were great, banter was good but then something happened. It all got very personal. Some key people left, which was a shame and then the site started expanding taking in Germany, and now other countries.

IMHO the site is not a close knit community as it was and charging for its use might be the straw that breaks the camels back I'm afraid.

I hope I am wrong but we'll see!
