Disclaimer: IANAL. I'm not a lawyer.
Good page about how weapons work in Sweden (this reflects the interpretation of the law): https://polisen.se/Lagar-och-regler/Vapen/Knivar-med-mera/ The actual text: 1 § Knivar, andra stick- och skärvapen och andra föremål som är ägnade att användas som vapen vid brott mot liv eller hälsa får inte innehas på allmän plats The law is not written to be precise. But basically if you carry something which only purpose is to be used as a weapon, it's illegal. It's illegal to carry a feather if your intended use is to use it as a weapon. It's both easy and complicated at the same time since the law doesn't allow you to carry anything with the single purpose of being a weapon when you need to defend yourself. (But as a counterpoint it happily allows me to carry a longsword for the purpose of training sports.) |

As far as I can tell Swedish girls either defend themselves by
* simply not backing down, * actually having trained some martial art, or * scream for help and about 20 muscular blonde angry men will appear instantly to help them. I've seen all three happen. I have also seen cases where someone really could have used pepper spray, in the case of crazy stalkers: a friend of mine got beaten up by her ex-girlfriend-turned-stalker, following and waiting for a moment without anyone around - probably screaming more would have helped but it's hard to do the right thing, isn't it? |

Carry a cane. No one will bother you about it and it is an excellent weapon.

It's not suggested to use pepper spray in Sweden. As earlier commentars have mentioned; there are perfectly fine legal options out there now called "försvarsspray".
