The Local _ Studying _ SI + University Scholarships 2017 - Sweden MS

Posted by: polymaxim 25.Mar.2017, 06:39 AM

Although the first admissions round has completed, for many of us scholarship applications are still pending and the wait continues.

Continuing in the spirit of the 'Merit Rating 2017 - Sweden MS Applicants' forum, I think it would help us and future applicants with the stressful scholarship process if we shared our experiences.

Here's a template so we can introduce ourselves:

Universities: KTH(reserve), Gothenburg (admitted)
Scholarships: GU Scholarships, SI Scholarship (Region: SA)

Hope you find this helpful!

Hi there!
I believe its really weird that no one answered on this topic, since I read several people applied for scholarships (SI in particular). Maybe its because this part is a lot more competitive comparing to getting admitted to a university, so people do not want to share their states?
Anyway, I will share because I do not believe that anyone from SI or other places will read here and decide not to give us scholarships.
I applied to a SI scholarships and got accepted to Malmö, so now waiting for the results. No way I can attend without a scholarship.

I also got admitted to jönköping and now much pressure is on whether I get the SI scholarship or not. Because surely without it, I may have to try again next year. I am praying ten times hard to get this.

Also admitted at Gothenburg and waiting for the SI scholarship. Let's hope we get good news! Does anybody know whether we have to say yes to the offer on UA or whether we will automatically be considered for options we have been conditionally admitted to?

Posted by: Man 26.Mar.2017, 03:38 PM

Got conditionally admitted to uppsala but sadly no university scholarship!
SI scholarship is the only hope left now!

Does anyone know other agencies that would fund our studies?!

Hi

I also applied for the Uppsala scholarship. But they said my name is on the waiting list. Does anyone know how to find out the number on the list? How many scholarships do they offer each year?

Hey, I'm on the same boat. Emailed them about the ranking though. I'll let you know if they reply. Really worried, can't attend without the scholarship.

Me three. I didn’t participate in the other thread because my acceptance is pointless without a scholarship. I just emailed the coordinator to ask where in the reserve list I am to weigh my chances.I am desperately wishing that all the wicked genius who got offers from both Uppsala scholarship and SI scholarship kindly accept the latter and saves my life. My country is not eligible for any of the SI scholarship, so this is my one and only chance.

I am not sure about Uppsala, but I know that other universities such as Gothenburg do not allow you to choose between SI and the university scholarship. If you get SI then you forfeit the university scholarship.

Master of Public Health at Lund University was my first choice and I got Conditionally admitted as I am a fee paying student from Malawi. I applied for SISS Category 3 where 609 made it to the second stage with only 50 places available.

I hope I will make it so that I can fulfill my dream of attending my studies in Sweden. Let's continue to wait patiently

I am in a similar situation, with 267 in my category and only 10 scholarships available. I hope we all get some good news.

Of course we can only be hopeful. Its certain that not all those who qualified for those categories got admitted. Some may be on waiting list and others not getting the place. Despite all these scenarios, we can only hope that we make it. Am wishing you the best as you wait

Those who have applied for Umea scholarships should check their e-mails. On the other forum it stated that those receiving the scholarship have been notified.

actually, i think in case of uppsala you get to choose. this is from an official q&a compilation sent by the uni coordinator "A: Students can be awarded both scholarships. If awarded two scholarships, you must however choose which one you wish to keep. Students cannot keep both scholarships. " thanks for your reply tho smile.gif

similar situation, uppsala around 10 as well. but you know, not all 3000 applicants got admission to the uni, which makes that number a quite larger batch than your real competition.

i had my hopes high because im in the reserve list of uppsala scholarship, but it seems that so many people are in the list... im not even sure whether the list is a selective group of applicants, or everyone is put on reserve...

Hi everyone

Is there anybody who already received an answer for the Chalmers Scholarships?

Thanks.

Posted by: KTshady 31.Mar.2017, 12:58 PM

Guys! I've just got a reply from the Uppsala university.

"Successful applicants for a scholarship has to respond to the scholarship offer on the 12th of April at the latest. If a response is not received by deadline or if the candidate declines the scholarship the offer will go to the highest ranked reserve on the reserve list.

If a scholarship recipient changes his/hers mind and declines the scholarship after accepting it, before the scholarship admission round closes, June 5th, the offer will go to the highest ranked reserve on the reserve list and will in that case be contacted by email.

Since some scholars renounce their scholarships, there is a chance that it will be made available scholarships. You have a good place on the reserve list for a scholarship, but it is impossible to predict your chance. You just have to wait and see and hope for the best.

Best regards,"

I'm wondering if they say "You're are in a good place" for everyone that emailed them, lol. Anyway, I suppose we have two rounds for this. Let just be patiently wait and hope it will come out well!

I think they do it randomly, to keep everything in check. I read their comment in one of their facebook responses, someone had asked a similar question.
I don't know by which means(phone or email) but what I think about random is that they do a picky picky ponky on your referees, then contact the chosen one.
I hope they do it by phone cz by email is a night mare on my side because my referees need to be followed up.

Btw, does anyone know how do they calculate our point or whatever they use to rank us?
I mean I've got both BA and MA degrees in the same field, pretty acceptable references and motivation letter but I was placed in reserve and told very politely I've got no chances as my ranking was low. What should I do to prove I am not able pay that tuition? Should I complain or/and cry? ohmy.gif

That's one strong background you have but I think maybe something that is so important to them didn't come out clearly compared to your competitors.

Sometimes complains do help but I think the schorlaship are so competitive, it might not really change the status.

Also admitted at Gothenburg and waiting for the SI scholarship. Let's hope we get good news! Does anybody know whether we have to say yes to the offer on UA or whether we will automatically be considered for options we have been conditionally admitted to?

Hey tjugosjo, I emailed the SI team this same question too and this is their response:

"Dear Thao,

No, you can accept the study place now if you want. It won’t affect your chances of receiving a scholarship. However, in case you are not awarded a scholarship then you would be required to pay a tuition fee if you want to keep your study place."

Hope this helps. Cheers!

Hi Davit,

I think you don't have to prove it anyhow because most of students who apply for this scholarships are in the same situation - they (we) can't afford to pay the tuition fee!
But personally i believe (maybe I am wrong) that they don't want to hear from you that you don't have money to pay your studies, they want to hear about your motivation, future plans and they are looking for change makers!!! They will shape an image of you and your abilities to be a leader based on your CV, motivation an reference...

I am from Moldova and I am desperately waiting for Visby. Every day I read, reread my CV, motivation, reference and thinking what would they think about it...the true is that I can't have an objective opinion because I don't know what others wrote

p.s. my mother language is Romanian! but I am love with Russian and German languages smile.gif

Dude, when I say preety acceptable I say it in a deep sarcastic way. We all know how to compose an ''acceptable'' Motivation letter...
I've introduced myself quite preciesly and it's true about my vision of future, leading qualities and skills etc as well.
Coming to complaining or crying, I was sarcastic even worse: In fact, I never complain...
What I really care about is the abstracting way of ranking us for the university scholarship without particular requirements that Visby Does require, for example.

We're in the same boat, I'm from Armenia and my country's going to participate in Visby race first time this year and hopefully I'll get a scholarship. Last year Moldova got only four Visby scholarships, so let's hope this year they'll give more including you.

I hope you will be among the lucky Visby holders smile.gif
As far as I know they try to distribute the number of scholarships per country proportional to the number of applicants from the same country! The competition is normally around 5 persons for one scholarship...so let's hope for the best smile.gif

Hello folks,

Does anybody know about university scholarships in the form of reduction in tuition fee? What's the usual number of these scholarships for Uppsala and Chalmers? What's the chance of getting these scholarships?

Posted by: pipepaniagua 2.Apr.2017, 12:07 AM

Does anyone know if there is a specific quantity of scholarships for each country? In order to promote diversity of nationalities? Or do they choose the scholarship holders based entirely on their own merit?

Which one are you mentioning? Uni scholarship or SI? If it's SI then I'm not sure if diversity is their goal though they did state something about that on their site, besides leadership skills. I found a forum about SI from a few years back and one appicant was mentioning that she got perfect GPA, references, motivation letter, bachelor's thesis but she didn't get it. So I'm not sure how they are assessing the applications. Who knows it might be different about merits this year.

If you are talking about the SI, a similar question was raised last year.

Q: Hi, I must admit I have been really heartbroken not to receive the scholarship. I just had one question regarding representation. As I saw there are very limited number of scholarships given to Central Asian countries and something that really stood out is awarding 8 scholarships to Kazakhstan and none to applicants from Tajikistan. Tajikistan is the poorest Central Asian country vs KZ whose government provides way more opportunities for its youth in terms of study abroad. Given that, I just feel it is incredibly unfair not to award at least one scholarship to Tajikistan... What are your thoughts? Can someone explain me rationale? Thanks in advance

A: The selection within SI Study Scholarships category 3 was not dependent on which country an applicant is from. It is the relevance and quality of applications that matters. Of course how many applicants from one country applied in step 2 and how many were admitted indirectly affected how many applicant from that country were awarded a scholarship. Kindly note that it is not all applicants who were selected in step 1 to continue to step 2 applied in step 2 and were admitted by a Swedish university. /Yan, SI Scholarship Team

So if you are part of Categories 1, 2 or 3 there is no specific allocation by country as I understand. There are however exceptions for specific countries which are in separate categories (e.g. Syria & South Africa)

Not sure about Chalmers, but for Uppsala they give you an exception from paying the tuition. And the total seats for Uppala scholarship is around 50, but 4 out of 5 are country-specific. So if you are not from China, Hongkong, US, Afghanistan, Central African Republic, Iraq, Kenya, Libya, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Turkey, Ukraine nor Yemen, your chances are in the remaining 10 seats. Haha. I feel like complaining and crying as well. But as they mentioned on their first email, appeal is not accepted and as they mentioned when we first applied, they dont evaluate you on the grounds of how much you need the tuition. At least you have your SI scholarship left. I'm an unlucky student from a fairly lucky country that I'm not eligible for SI. I google 2015/2016 and 2016/2016 records where I checked their previous allocations. For this year, their site was showing 1 for each country but I know that will not be the case. So its not possible to know the exact allocations

Where did you see that? On the SI web, they are very vague about the date when they will email the successful candidates.

I saw the emailing thing in the Visby group in Vkontakte. It's not helpful because people are not very sharing. But I read it down to the last year posts, and it was clearly stated that they emailed the successful ones a few days before the results were posted on the web.

As for me, I've made a mistake in my motivation, a mistype, I've typed seconomic instead of economic and overall my motivation letter is pretty weak I think unlike my reference letter.

I'm talking about the simple, 'Congrats, you got it' letter, which I think will be emailed this Friday. Funny, but I also visualize it from time to time. But I try to restrain myself from doing it because I usually don't get what I want if I set my heart to much on it. Yeah, I'm superstitious biggrin.gif

As for me, I've made a mistake in my motivation, a mistype, I've typed seconomic instead of economic and overall my motivation letter is pretty weak I think unlike my reference letter.

One typo won't ruin the entire application package. And nobody, me included, can know what kind of motivation letter will impress Visby people. At this stage, I have absolutely no clue what are my, or anybody else's, chances. We should try to keep it together a bit more and stay strong.

Don't worry about it! It'w really very optional. If you have it OK but it's not a mandatory. I mean it's quite normal not having a website.
As for me, I've made a mistake in my motivation, a mistype, I've typed seconomic instead of economic and overall my motivation letter is pretty weak I think unlike my reference letter.

Thanks, Davit. And I hope that you can worry less about that (because it is obvious that we all are not able to stop worrying now biggrin.gif) From what you've shared so far, it seems that you've worked very hard yourself and you're such an intelligent person so I don't think your motivation letter is weak. You're probably overthinking it, just like I am about the personal website. Btw, "seconomics" is a project in Europe "with the goal of synthesizing sociological, economic and security science into a usable, concrete, actionable knowledge for policy makers and social planners responsible for citizen's security" if you wanna know. Who knows it may mean something to them haha tongue.gif

Stay strong, RRR. Maybe take your mind off things by watching or reading something light? I've been reading and researching about SI too and worrying about my motivation letter at night. Ah, you too need something to take your mind off all these for a while, Aly. Actually if we choose to do something that helps us relieve stress, time might seem to move faster and that's exactly what we need right now. Though I'm telling you this, all these stress and waiting, to me, are somehow worth it. Whether I get in or not, I feel like I'm already so lucky, like I've won something. Because here I am, witnessing first-hand people from different parts of the world getting together to help one another out, making one another feel better and knowing that you yourself are able to participate in this goodness, instead of fighting with anger and bitterness for the same thing. I'd say this is pretty amazing. I'm sure there are other plans waiting for us, even if we don't get the scholarship. This is not the end. I do hope you can find some time to chill for a bit. Cheers!

You can't blame yourself if you are overthinking it because anyone in this situation would be overthinking right now. In fact, all of us are. Oh you're not the only one that has problems with concentration so I can totally relate and understand. I don't think I have the strongest CV either and I'm serious, but you've done all you could so you know that you've done your best, whether there was a small mistake or not. Oh, come on. You are too hard on yourself. We all make typos, it's not a tragedy. I also put a lot in this application, and a lot in my life depends on it, and being hard on myself is my daily routine, and I know, it's annoying to make mistakes when you try really hard, but you made it this far, and you should be proud of yourself.

I may sound like a hypocrite because I also have related problems with being hard on myself and stuff, but you really should try to stop doing that. At least for this week before the 10th. I just realized that my CV is not exactly the same as the format they indicated we use. The only differences between them is that one is PDF and mine says 2002-2017 at the bottom but the doc says 2002-2015.

Did everyone fill their CV's on the doc. they have on site?

In case you are curious, the notification email that was sent last year had the name "Advance notice regarding your SI scholarship application"

In case you receive a similar email you are the lucky one wink.gif

I hope you are right! I got so anxious that I sent an e-mail but no response yet. Actually I put my photo because I am not applying for Visby, the photo was OK. When I read that people were upset because they put their photos, I realized that it was not OK for Visby applicants. Other then that, it all looks the same. This schorlaship is the only academic opportunity that I can have this year, I wasn't clever enough to make several applications to different countries. So it's either Sweden or nothing. Just like you my future plans and career depends largely on it.
The more you guys keep talking about the Europass CV format the more I suspect myself of having messed up.
I wanted to get to 10th April so badly so that I can know my fate but now I'm scared of it more than ever. I'm actually having continuous headaches right now and taking pain killers on and off. But I have just enrolled for a short course at my home country, so that I can have something to fall back on to or put my mind on just in case things don't go as hoped for. I hope my Easter and birthday month will have some good news.

In case you are curious, the notification email that was sent last year had the name "Advance notice regarding your SI scholarship application"

In case you receive a similar email you are the lucky one wink.gif

Btw, I also feel that my recommendation is better than my motivation! hopefully they will consider more the recommendation ...

You've just put a little more pressure to the already-under-stress candidates here you know wink.gif ?

Imagine instead of only waiting for 10th, some will be very anxious by this Friday, and they'll become even more stressed during the weekends in case they don't get the email lol laugh.gif

Some people wrote here that they like to imagine the moment they first read the email (I do it myself). So, I put the name of the email here so that people can imagine that moment better and with more details, to have the full picture so to say biggrin.gif

I think you can still apply for other Unis and scholarships in other countries. I remember that most of them have a deadline coming up. Just sharing. If you don't mind me asking, where are you from?

Yep, I've always been very hard on me, it's kinda philosophy or life style.
This is my second year I apply. Last year I lacked info very much so I entered TOEFL after deadline and my application was a late one...no scholarship was available... A couple of months later I was even offered a place in Oxford but couldn't make it as well for the same reason.
Sweden's the best place to study and live I think, I don't worry about prestige or stuff like that. If I could choose between Harvard and Uppsala, I'd definitely choose Uppsala...
I really count on them this year coz I'm too old (I'll be 29 in July) for next year biggrin.gif and my TOEFL is going to expire...
We just must get it and we'll get it!

QUOTE (Aly @ 4.Apr.2017, 08:57 PM) *
I may sound like a hypocrite because I also have related problems with being hard on myself and stuff, but you really should try to stop doing that. At least for this week before the 10th. By the way, I was this close to sending my TOEFL report late because I ordered the score report to be shipped to the wrong address. God, I can't describe what I felt and what words I used to describe that situation back then)
And getting into Oxford sounds really cool, regardless.
I personally wanted my specific program in Uppsala way before I knew I wanted to apply to the second MA. Yeah, mystical))
And, as Thao mentioned before, this year is not the end. There's no such thing as been too old to study. I mean, seriously, man? You are JUST 29. For example, I am 27, and I know a lot of really smart people who went back to school in their late 20's and 30's and are doing quite fine biggrin.gif Cheer up!

So true, Aly. Davit, don't worry about it. I remember seeing somewhere, either Lund or Linnaeus Uni's last year statistics that they admitted a 45 year old student. Also, if I'm not wrong, a 65 year old man is applying for Uni and SI scholarship as well. He was asking the SI team on facebook if it is eligible for him to apply, considering his age and they said he's welcome to apply because they don't have any age restriction. I hope he's applying because that's awesome knowing that he's coming after what he wants at the age that people thought it's a done deal. Not trying to make you feel worse or anything, Davit. Just sharing smile.gif

So many Unis in Europe like Austria, Belgium, Germany, etc. are offering free courses like bachelor and master's degree to foreign students as well. One of my Vietnamese friends just got accepted into a uni in Germany without tuition fees. It's not a scholarship. They have been practicing this for decades now, Sweden used to offer free courses for foreign students as well but they just changed their policy in 2014 if I'm not mistaken.

And yep, Sweden's changed the policy since 2013-2014.

There are other countries in Europe that offer this too, besides Germany. Also, if I'm not wrong, that friend of mine didn't have any knowledge in German whatsoever. You can always let them know that you'll sign up for German classes there or you just simply sign up for classes beforehand there as well I guess.

In Catholic, we have just finished 40 days of lent and we call this Friday a "Good Friday" where mourn crusification and death of Jesus Christ. So we fast, repent and pray- it's fobbiden to eat meat too. On Monday we celebrate his rise.

So if I happen to get good news, I will wait till Monday to celebrate.

Alex, +46 is definitely Swedish code but they won't give you a call, I think. Fisrt, it's early for a notification and second, they don't mention a phone call as a tool of notification... So it could be a call from your uni coz if you're admitted universityadmissions.se has nothing to do with you any longer...

-Can I know the number of applicants who applied for SI scholarship from Egypt and got admitted/conditionally admitted on 24th march?

Does that mean no referee got contacted???

Posted by: Davit 6.Apr.2017, 01:58 PM

Actually I don't know anyone whos referee's received a call or an email. Don't know what to think about this. They either simply don't get linked with referees or it's a really bad sign indeed...

Posted by: KTshady 6.Apr.2017, 02:10 PM

I don't think they contact the referees at all. They will assess from the letters only. So that means if your referees seem credible enough then it should be okay.

I don't know as well... on the other hand, I don't think it's difficult to send about 60 emails during a day, so most likely they'll notify all the succesful applicants during a few hours.
At least one of us got it! That's great!

Posted by: Aysnz 6.Apr.2017, 04:10 PM

Congrats to everyone who got the e-mail! My question is that, can people who got it share the time on the mail (swedish one). Maybe, it was an automatic mail sent at the same time to everyone. If so, times will be the same or very close together.

If we know it, then maybe we can stop waiting till 10th when some people decline the offer so reserves have a chance.

Exactly, I am very happy for all who have gained scholarships, but this kind of approach from their side is really Rude !!!! Now we have to go crazy for the following hours...

Posted by: RRR 6.Apr.2017, 05:09 PM

So i received it at 05:02 pm( i guess this should be my country local time). aly and aydan may be guys you can also share time in order we can at least make some judgement?
The content is general like saying this is advance notice and we need Aprol 10 list and then accept our study place. It also says that if we decide to reject they requested to do it as soon ad possible otherwise reply is not requested.

Posted by: Roman 6.Apr.2017, 05:10 PM

I think they will not send offers tomorrow, BUT in social networks some guys from Armenia, Azerbaijan and Moldova wrote that they received. I mean, that for example Russia or Ukraine, probably, can wait till tomorrow, like in alphabet order...

This is an advance notice e-mail, to inform that your scholarship application has been successful. On Monday 10 April, SI will publish lists of successful scholarship candidates on our website. Since you must decide about your study place, and accept/decline it at the universityadmissions.se website by Wednesday 12 April at the latest, we recommend that you already now start to consider the scholarship offer.

On Monday when the list of successful candidates is published, you should log into your account at the universityadmissions.se website, and accept the study place you have been admitted to. If you have been offered a study place through local admissions, you should follow the acceptance procedure as outlined by the university. Please note that the scholarship offer is only valid to the master’s programme that you have currently been admitted to. If you have been placed on reserve for a higher priority programme, you must decline to such offer.

If you however intend to reject the SI scholarship offer, please inform us as soon as possible.

You probably also have quite many questions about practical matters concerning the scholarship offer, but we recommend that you wait with inquires until you have received the formal decision letter in the beginning of next week. You will also be given the possibility to accept the scholarship according to a formal procedure later, so you don’t have to inform SI about your scholarship acceptance now. Therefore, reply to this e-mail only if you intend to decline the scholarship offer.

Thanks for info! We really lack it.
What I think now is it's the final situation now, I mean tomorrow no email will be sent. Who hasn't got is out.

Dude, could you please share the link where you've seen Armenian receivers?

Guys 16.02 and 17.02 are the same time in Ukraine and Azerbaijan. So those were automatic emails. And that means we won't get emails...

Guys, I'm feeling so bad if I brought the bad news with that email notification. For the last few months, we have shared this fight together, both the good and bad stuff. And I have to say that, even if this is it for this year scholarship, you shouldn't feel down. I know, it hurts. I do. I received a scholarship rejection from other place just two days ago. Honestly, I had so many rejections in my professional life that it's almost embarrassing.
But you should know that there always be more scholarships, more chances, and they are all waiting for you. A rejection is a way to become better and stronger.
