The Local _ Feedback _ Well done TL

Apart from charging people for crap news your spam button does not work.

Welcome back false passport and pill peddlers.

Do you think that "the sky is falling" too???

Posted by: Gamla Hälsingebock 5.Dec.2017, 12:18 AM

Why are you advocating mass movement to another venue???

Aren't you happy here???

Posted by: wondering_again 5.Dec.2017, 01:02 AM

The local has been a wonderful site with a lot of information over the past 7 years and with the forum being helpful to a lot of people.

However, it is tough to make ends meet now and especially if you want people to pay for quality journalism. I mean if the big sites in US and UK struggle you can imagine how much harder it is for a company such as thelocal.

Still I will miss this place once it does get shutdown. If there is one person I miss the most it is puffin who helped a lot with advice in early 2009 and thereabouts. Hope puffin is doing well wherever she is.

Posted by: Gamla Hälsingebock 5.Dec.2017, 01:33 AM

Amen on Puffin, she was the crown jewel of TheLocal...

But why are people giving up on the site???

I don't understand the idea that TheLocal is finished just because they want to charge for the service they provide...just like others do...

Since when does that mean the end for any enterprise???

Posted by: intrepidfox 5.Dec.2017, 08:06 PM

False document spams now. I sent a message via their Facebook side giving them details. No reply. Maybe James Savage has met Flaneur and they are buggering.

RIP TL

Posted by: Cheeseroller 6.Dec.2017, 12:52 AM

@Savage - as Puffin left in 2013, how do you know that as you joined in 2016? Same question to wondering_again - joined in 2014.

Posted by: Cheeseroller 6.Dec.2017, 01:12 AM

I understand the Local putting up a paywall, but this won't work for the most of the crap that is currently published. Readers can be surprisingly mean even if it's 1€ a month, if the content is not interesting or obviously biased.

I subscribe to FT, NYT and WashPost - and each of these delivers the occasional article that is really insightful. I am not so interested in politics and copy and paste from Reuters etc. Or the FT especially has commenters who at times really deliver.

The subscription model is a tough one, because we have all done this and not used the service only to remember a year later we wasted money. Like gym contracts.

I do think there is a space for the Local, but as a service for English speaking expats. Too many stories are trivial - there needs to be an edgier journalism. And we need to know stuff that only someone who has lived in Sweden for 10 years understands. i.e. more of a service.

The forum needs to be better organised, like toytowngermany.com - where useful informative posts are always available in a separate group. It's tedious to keep reading the same questions. And perhaps this would encourage more debate, meet up groups, etc.

Posted by: Gamla Hälsingebock 6.Dec.2017, 11:49 PM

What was/is, your motivation to take the time to research a members last posts???

Or is the database of TheLocal an open book to you as you have previously stated...

I have challenged you before to send me my database info privately, in particular my IP address, etc..

You have also mentioned that you know who/what posters here are known by different names...

It's time for you to prove yourself...

If you cannot, than just go away!!!

Posted by: Cheeseroller 7.Dec.2017, 09:33 AM

There is a new EU law that starts in May next year that will force all websites that collect personal data to offer the option to remove this - this data would include all posts, server logs, website analytic tools that collect IP address, etc. It is possible that the costs to implement this will force the closure of this forum.

Posted by: Gamla Hälsingebock 7.Dec.2017, 10:08 AM

The spam button:

It still does not work, but the spam is "Soft core" spam that probably would not be removed, had the button been working...

Maybe they are reverting to the "old" way...

Maybe a "Hard core" filter has been added...

Any thoughts???

I never have and never will pay to use a website. Most free websites get their income through advertising, annoying as this is to users but is a necessity in order to keep it a free service. The only person inconvenienced is the end user really, and as long as advertisements are not they key feature of the site then users will continue to use the site.

Although I have been a user of this site on and off for over a decade, I would say that I don't use it enough to justify paying to use it so I for one will not be back if that were the case.

Yes I think it is a useful site, especially for those who are new to the country and finding their feet or for those looking for specialist help and need help.

When I first started using this site the people on here were great, banter was good but then something happened. It all got very personal. Some key people left, which was a shame and then the site started expanding taking in Germany, and now other countries.

IMHO the site is not a close knit community as it was and charging for its use might be the straw that breaks the camels back I'm afraid.

I hope I am wrong but we'll see!

Suspicious indeed!

When I first came here TheLocal was a Swede bashing paradise...

The minute I opened my mouth I got mugged!!!

And then I gave as I got...

The wheel comes around!!!

Are you writing a book on controversial web sites???

What exactly is your purpose here???

Posted by: Gamla Hälsingebock 8.Dec.2017, 12:12 AM

You seem to be quite occupied with member research for a person with no purpose...

I'll ask you again, you once stated that you had access to Thelocal's database and knew which posters have more than one profile name...Why not tell us and then leave since you think this forum is dead, what do you have to lose???

Lastly, you seem to prefer a forum that is critical of Sweden and it's people...do you???

And if so please tell us why...

Again what do you have to lose???

Posted by: Gamla Hälsingebock 8.Dec.2017, 01:56 AM

Your are a great "Dodger", and good at "Double Speak" you should be in Politics!!!

Your list is a bit off, two of the members you listed did not leave in 2013, how did you miss that???

You mentioned that you did not have a purpose now that the forum is dead, what was your purpose when it wasn't???

Did you think that your previous idiotic postings of crime reports, that flooded the forum helped to keep it alive and viable???

You are guilty in your attempt to ruin this forum that you now call dead and meaningless... Where are you coming from???

Are you sorry for your part in making this forum dead and a wasteland as you now call it???

Do you smile to a mirror for knowing what you did or tried to do???

You are a coward for not having the decency to answer my questions...

Why should anyone here think of you as an honest, and truthful member of this forum...

Posted by: The Local 8.Dec.2017, 06:47 AM

Sorry for the break in the spam button.

We upgraded a software package, and the upgrade was incompatible with the spam script.

It's now fixed.

How long have you been in Sweden?

Posted by: Gjeebes 8.Dec.2017, 11:10 AM

Is that a rhetorical question?

Posted by: Gjeebes 8.Dec.2017, 11:13 AM

Yes, I thought such things were not tolerated on this forum, and when breached, said user is to be blocked and banned.

Is that correct?

Just a question...most foreigners last between 3-6 years, average.

Posted by: Gjeebes 8.Dec.2017, 11:38 AM

Wow, only 3-6 years. Ya, Sweden really is the place to be!

Maybe that's because in "few-opportunities" Sweden, the "goodest" country, the general xenophobia, envy and lack of competence (and confidence) of the locals, reduces one's ability to find their way to making a decent living.

But hey, Sveddy, don't worry. The last bunch Sweden imported, are certainly here to stay!

And they will certainly contribute to the future stability of Sweden's "hand-out" state!

It's all part of the grand plan, don't you see? NANNY's got it covered man!

Enjoy!

If this website is losing readers, it's because it has become less relevant. Many of the new stories are puff pieces or trivia. What immigrants who haven't yet learned Swedish want, is real Swedish news.

Not:
Rats rejoice as easy food helps Gothenburg's rodent population to surge
WATCH: 73-year-old Swede rescues trapped elk
12 things expats miss most from home at Christmas
Seven unusual things I didn't think I'd miss until I left Sweden
'Things were going really well in India, but I wanted a taste of a foreign lifestyle'
Why America's gun culture made us raise our children in Sweden
Inbreeding in Scandinavian wolves is worse than we thought
Ebenezer Scrooge: 'Why I hate Swedish Christmas'
Ikea praised for making Swedish language pöpular around the world. (hahahaha!)

I would be interested to read article about foreigners who have been successful - and I don't mean someone who ran a one-person company for 6 months. Where are the role models?

Posted by: Cheeseroller 8.Dec.2017, 01:35 PM

Another suggestion is for the administrators to be able to pin specific threads. This would cut down on the same questions being asked time and time again. Or better still a Wiki like in the German forum:

YES! Why would anyone in their right mind want to pay for irrelevant news???

Meanwhile in regular news (hint) possible ban on begging, Aftonbladet boss fired, I could list all the regular news topics for today, but you decide to put "Rats rejoice as a main headline" kind of pathetic...

What you are producing is NOT news.

The only reason you are getting clicks is because people are writing about their immigration problems in the community. If you shut those threads or forums down, you would be out of business.
