Could it be that your learning habits are a bit slower than others? No disrespect but it is unfair to use your experience as a barometer to determine what uni studies in Sweden will be like for everyone. My uni in America was heavily research-based and when I did my Masters, I took the maximum number of credits permitted every semester and taught full-time freshman courses concurrently, and I still never put it anything close to 60 hours per week. I'd guess about 40 per week but that is even pushing it. Still did all the required work, publications, conferences and all, and ended up with stellar grades.

Your experience cannot be everyone's experience, so it is a bit to unfair to dismiss someone's ability to work full-time and go to school full-time. I did it and in fact, ALL the international students I knew in the US did it. Some of them even had two full-time jobs while being full-time students and ended up with better grades than most Americans.

So how would you explain the group? Every individual is slow?

Darren keeps folk up to date, he has also started his own micro brewery here in Ume? within the last year and has started selling to local pubs and restaurants. I also heard a rumour that systembolaget have started selling his beers, but can't confirm.

Full time study is considered 40 hours/week, but that already includes homeworks, labs, seminars, projects, etc. It's not like you attend 40 hours of lectures and then you need to do other things on top of it. Nobody spends 60+ hours. Even 40 hours is more than what a mediocre student actually needs to get top grades.

So there is plenty time for a part-time job especially if you don't mind passing with low grades, and not being able to socialize with other students. It is quite difficult to find the job though.

Wrong. I study full time at the university in Ume?, and I often put in over 60 hours per week as group work and research are not included in the 40 hours study week. It also means meeting at weekends to finely tune presentations etc.

[quote name='trumanshow' post='832468' date='21.Mar.2014, 07:04 PM']Thanks Svensksmith, I feel like parking with my car pointing the wrong way, walking in to a house wearing my shoes, striking up a conversation with a stranger, drinking a beer in the park, denouncing Olaf Palme as a heretic, playing Abba songs backwards to find the real meanings, saying hello to my neighbours, standing at the deli counter without taking a lappar, going to konsum wearing my tracksuit bottoms...but most of all I want to cry - For a sad, confused, politically chastened, uptight, apathetic, small minded country that has refused to believe that I have anything to offer. Goodnight Vienna. Or Vaxj

Not really, you would have to drive about 4 hours north to Arjeplog or Arvidsjaur to find villages. Shame about the museums though as there is one in Lycksele as well as a Sami silver museum in Arjeplog.

There's 50 of us?! I've only seen about 3 the entire 2yrs i've been here, though I must say ive been avoiding anyone English in an effort to 'become more Swedish'.
Its funny that you say we all hang out at the Bishops, kind of reinforces our stereotype of avoiding local culture and hanging around in familiar pubs when abroad tongue.gif I prefer the Pipes or Lottas myself...

You must have met a few of us, they frequent Lotta's when not at Bishops smile.gif

Unfortunately there is very little to choose from in Ume, it's a bit of a monopoly, and the council owned Bostaden are probably your best bet, be prepared to pay up to 3500:- per month for an 18sq meters box with shared kitchen and showers sad.gif

Fish n Chips at Bishops Arms in Umeå works a treat, there were 2 English chefs working there and used proper batter with ale in it, the custom has continued as far as i'm led to believe.

I had this problem last year after I had some some storage space added to a room. I pressumed this were eggs between the wood who came out. I hoovered them up 2 times a day and after a week or 2 the problem was gone, this year no flies at all.

Tis indeed the main source of the problem, they lay eggs in the frames between the glazing.

I sit right on the limit and ignore them, pisses them right off. If I get bumped it's their fault (hasn't happened yet).
