Citizenship through a great-grandparentAm I a Swedish citizen? |

My great-grandfather was born in Malmö and then immigrated to the USA in the 19 teens via Montreal. Since Swedish citizenship is passed on by jus sanguinis, I believe this technically made my grandfather a Swedish citizen, and thus my mother a Swedish citizen as well. Would I then have any claim to Swedish citizenship?

Wasn't there some legislature in 2000(?) changing rules for citizenship requirements???
Not to be argumentative but I have never heard of the 10-year rule and Sweden does allow for dual citizenship as does the US and this came about in 1894??? |

Unfortunately not. First of all while dual citizenship is allowed these days this was not the case back then. Second, even if you are born a Swedish citizen you will have to actively claim it before the age of 20 if you have never lived in Sweden else it will be forfeit (given that you have another citizenship).
Tl;dr - You can claim citizenship by birth but not by ancestry. |
