I'd like to know how well are the degree from BTH recognised abroad ? They seem to admit any student they can just to get subvention from the government. Is this affecting the reputation of the school ? Is it just as good as any other universtiy in sweden ?

Posted by: OLA 21.Sep.2005, 07:15 AM

To Billybob,
How do you define''abroad''? Because if you are referring to America,Asia Europe or even Africa, there are students, researchers and lecturers from there at Blekinge;´which is an indication of the high regard for the quality of education here at Blekinge.
It is up to you and the ball is in your court to decide whether you want to apply to Blekinge.
Cheers and have a blessed day.

How did you know that BTH is admitting any number of students just to get subvention from the government? I don't believe your words. regarding reputation, don't be fooled by the ranking coz this is a new university. and one thing in Sweden they don't have Mickey-Mouse University like US or UK. The quality is more or less same among all universities. All universities have some speciality. BTH has good reputation in Software Engineering,Signal Processing, and Strategic leadership towards sustanability.

I didn't know that Mickey-Mouse has also opened a University in here.

Swedish Universities have good reputation and a degree that you get from a swedish university recognized in the US, but none of swedish universities have accreditation (talking about College of Business stuff. MBA etc.)

Employers certainly have strong preferences, which is one reason why many of the regional universities are struggling to recruit right now. The quality is certainly not more or less the same across different universities. I wish it were so and it may be comforting to believe it to be the case but it isn't so. It is true, however, that in certain specialist areas, a university may have a good reputation. However, the general statement that all universities are generally regarded as having the same quality is far from true.

Blekinge is usually considered to be a technical college and certainly does not have the reputation as a leading Business college. The most highly regarded place to do business is the Stockholm School of Economics Handelshögskolan which is internationally acclaimed and ranked.

This is interesting point. I will like to know Swedish perspective on this one. I know for sure big univs do such thing. Its also a game of financial matters and obtaining more funds from state.
For instance, at KTH, in my program there were almost 98 students in my class, may be at max 5 of them swedish and rest all international. Few international folks specially from asian countries had a questionable level of written and spoken english abilities. So all such matters made me believe that the point made above is kind of true in reality. Any other perspectives??

so is anyone on this board enrolled on the course? What are your opinions and impressions etc?

Posted by: Puffin 25.Oct.2007, 10:56 AM

Which course are you referring to? Several courses have been discussed on this thread ranging from engineering, IT to business

Posted by: Phill 26.Oct.2007, 04:15 PM

Ah ok, sorry, was refering to the online MBA course at BTH.

Posted by: Puffin 26.Oct.2007, 05:09 PM

I don't know quite how to say this - and I know nothing about the course - but the online MBA programme at BTH does not appear to be at all popular with Swedish students judging by the statistics held be the Central University Admissions Agency (VHS). Most of the places on these degrees are empty.

I guess that the college is trying get overseas students to apply to fill the gap.

I think that it is also a problem that BTH is known as a technical college and not for business - so most people in Sweden who want to take an MBA would probably not choose BTH as their first choice:

Admission statistics from VHS - distance MBA

Full-time: places 100 Eligible applicants 8 admitted 3

Part-time: places 100 Eligible applicants 24 admitted 21

So with only 21% and 3% of courses filled at the start of the course I guess that there will not be too much contact with others on the course!

Posted by: Phill 28.Oct.2007, 05:00 PM

thanks for the reply puffin - much appreciated, a very interesting read smile.gif

From your point about BTH being more of a technical college I see your point of maybe the course not being that popular. although one has to question the accuracy of the stats on vhs as well.

Degrees from BTH are well recognised within and outside Sweden. It is your skills that matter eventually in the job market. Over the past 9 years I have 3 degrees from BTH and these are very well recognised and appreciated anywhere in the world.
