A farmer who reported 69 of his cows missing in December is now suspected by police of attempted aggravated fraud, with officials now interrogating the suspected meat cheat.

"The chance that this could have been something other than theft has been one of our theories ever since it was reported," the police wrote in a statement.

The 47-year-old owner of the cattle had valued the cows at 700,000 kronor ($107,600) when he reported them missing from his farm in Stjärnhov, eastern Sweden.

"When I opened the gate I saw the animals were gone," he told the Expressen newspaper at the time.
