I have a couple of "radio controlled" clocks which pick up the MSF (formerly Rugby) radio signal and set themselves to the correct time. I'm assuming there's no point bringing them to Sweden, or is there, by some miracle, an equivalent system out there on the same frequency?

Not that i'm aware of, Internet Time Servers or Fröken Ur (Speaking clock) seem to be your only options. Outside of Stockholm there's not even DAB reception.

The old Rugby transmitter had a range of about 1500 km, so with Stockholm at 1250 km you could see that it depended where you were going whether it would work. If you read the article you referenced, you would see with the new transmitter "The signal can be received, and is widely used, in northern and western Europe". Anyway, these clocks are not under continuous synchronisation, but possibly only checked daily. Without synchronisation its an ordinary quartz clock that you will have to adjust yourself. But it will likely only need correction when the battery is going or the hour changes. Otherwise, unless you are bothered about the odd few seconds...

I believe there is a transmitter in Germany that is used for such things in Sweden, but no idea if it is compatible...

As I recall the radio transmitter covering Sweden is in Braunschweig in Germany. Some clocks and watches were of dual frequency, thus covered by Rugby and Braunschweig, since to avoid conflict they were at different frequencies. Most RC clocks sold in Sweden are tuned to Braunschweig. All my RC clocks and watches use the German transmitter which reaches, I believe, up to around Sundsvall.
There is however a chance that your clocks wil not receive the Rugby signal, or respond to the Braunschweig one, but will simply continue to function as clocks that require that little tweak now and then. And as has been said, unless you are a 'second accuracy' freak, you will have no problems. |
