English Trailer pulled by Swedish car... |

Here's a tricky one... and I wonder if anyone knows for sure what the score is:
My mate has an English trailer, it's a home made jobbie, but has had transits and VW busses on it before. It is here in sweden, has summer tyres on it, can I pull it behind my swedish registered car? I have BE driving license so the total weight is not an issue, but as UK trailers dont have registration documents, I wonder what the old bill will say if they stop me... If the trailer was mine I know I would not be allowed to use it as I have a swdidsh license, but as it belongs to a mate who is resident in the uk then apparently it is ok... But... Possible offences are likely to be, summer tyres on trailer in conjunction with studded winter tyres on the car pulling it (if the trailer was swedish registered). And possibly also some questions regarding how much a trailer like that is actually allowed to be loaded with. Anybody run into this before...?? Bish... <--- just bought another VW bus that need collecting... Doh! |

Bish, I might be wrong but I think that there's a 30kph rule for unregistered trailers. I think it might be a good idea for you to contact vägverket.

I'm pretty sure that - unlike the UK - trailers have to have their own numberplates, tax discs and be MOT:ed in Sweden.
I think you also have to put winter tyres on - there was a case recently in Dalarna where an elderly woman was convicted and imprisoned for manslaughter because here trailer with summer tyres slid accross the road causing an accident where someone died. I'd check out the legalities before you take to the road |

QUOTE (Puffin) I'm pretty sure that - unlike the UK - trailers have to have their own numberplates, tax discs and be MOT:ed in Sweden I towed a boat on an unregistered trailer (home-made to boot) and was advised that I could only drive at 30kph whilst the trailer was attached. Apparently it counts as a 'traktorsläp' with the associated speed restrictions. |

Yepp yepp and yepp... but I also read at vägverket that it's ok to use a trailer "registered" in the uk (uk trailer) as long as it is not owned by the holder of a swedish driving license (me).
Also aware of the tyre regulations, but unsure if the tyre regs are governed by the trailers land of origin (uk), or by the car pulling it... (sweden). I'll call vägverket and ask... see what they say... to be honest, I bet they dont know themselves to be honest... Might be safer to fork out 700kr and rent a trailer from a gas station..!!??! Bish <--- safer than sorryer... |

Currently been on the phone to vägverket for 15 minutes and the poor girl is working hard to get me an answer...
Might just end up using my mates UK registered van as well as his trailer... as they seem to not have a clue at VV. She just came back and admits that they don't know... and advised me to ask the police instead. Called the police who said it was up to vägverket to supply that sort of information, but when I pushed them, they tried to connect me to the vehicle questions department, who went home at 3pm. So I'll call again tomorrow... but it's looking more likely that I'll borrow my mates van and trailer... rather than take any chances... Bish <-- gawd bless 'em |
