Warning Long post, but several good points University students should read this! It may come to affect all of us in the near future!

Hi all, I came to Uppsala University approx 1.5 years ago. I heard coming in that student housing was virtually non-existent. I thought how bad could it be? I was wrong. It's worse than ever.
Those in Rikshem housing in the Kantorsgatan area have received letters detailing plans for the future. One states that Kantorsgatan area is to become a High School student area but University students will be offered a new place.. the other states that our internet connections will be shut off from the university to make way for other isps (which we will need to pay)

Letter 1-University Students being forced to move due to High School Students

Letter 2-Upnet-S being replaced by other ISP's

What is the problem you ask?

Consider that if there is already a problem of housing where is Rikshem going to put all these University students if they need our old rooms for Uppsala Gymnasieboende studenter? They clearly do not have new housing for us, that is why the letter doesn't specify when and where.

Additionally, how can they provide us other rooms when other University students already need the rooms they have left? we are potentially taking away from those who have been applying the queue and waiting for a room. This means your chances of getting a room are bumped down because high school students need a room much more than you do. What makes them a higher priority than us?

We, as University students should be a higher priority in this Kommun. We account for an extremly large portion of the Uppsala population. If Uppsala University had not accepted you -would you even be here?

Instead of helping the Kommun solve the problem of housing, they are deliberately creating more problems. They should focus on building more student housing. Not building housing that sells for 10,000+ kr.

Regarding the internet, we all know the student area's have been largely served by Upnet-S and in some areas the internet is a disgrace for university connections. I gather many students have complained to Rikshem and UU. In turn UU has decided to pull all internet services to Campus and University owned residences. This means that in addition to the high rent we already pay as students, you will need to get a contract from an ISP.

Generally not a huge problem if you have permanent housing and still have many semesters left but consider that you may be one of the students being forced to relocate from Kantorsgatan soon. Your internet may be shut off from April onwards if you do not buy into a new service. Who is going to give you a contract for internet for 2,3 or 4 months if you need to leave Uppsala soon?

Several calls to Rikshem have revealed they do not intend to lower your current rent and that the decision to pull the upnet-s service was Uppsala University. Clearly they couldn't have had better timing.

If you are a student at Uppsala University. I urge you to complain to Rikshem, the Kommun and Uppsala University. They all have a responsibility to take care of us. We can not let them walk all over us because some other organization is paying them more.

Thanks, perhaps we can make some difference.

why does Uppsala kommun have to take care of you I dont understand?
Uppsala needs to build for students but it needs to build firstly to generate appartments so people who is going to work have a place to live.
That is how you make a sound economy.

Obviously they do since they say they will offer you alternative accommodation!

No. They are relocating existing tenants, obviously the High School has done a good contract for locations nearby, maybe their students were staying further away. There is absolutely no mention of reducing accommodation, just relocation.

You do not know that for a fact, they may have already had contracts for accommodation in other locations, just now they have now signed for a better location and you will be relocated.

Arrogance at it's best! biggrin.gif ...university students make up 20% of the City population ...Your remark implies that the 80% that are not students should be treated with higher priority because they ARE an extremely large portion of the city population.
