A Chinese Uyghur who was arrested on suspicions of spying on refugees was remanded into custody on Friday by the Stockholm district court.

The 61-year-old man, who is a Swedish citizen, is suspected of having committed gross unlawful espionage, the most severe charge available under the law.

The court followed the prosecution's recommendation and remanded the man into custody.

Both the prosecution and the man's lawyer confirmed that he is Uyghur, an ethnic minority primarily residing in the northwestern Chinese province of Xinjiang.

The group is Muslim, speaks a Turkish dialect and the Chinese government has identified several armed Uyghur separatist groups.

The man came to Sweden as a political refugee in the late 1990s and became a Swedish citizen in 2002.

Björn Hurtig, the man's attorney, said he was unable to comment on whether the Chinese government may have leverage over the man, and if he is being blackmailed.

During the custody negotiations, which were held behind closed doors, the man was only referred to as X.

“X is on reasonable grounds suspected of unlawful espionage during the period January 2008 to June 3, 2009,” said chief prosecutor Tomas Lindstrand.

Hurtig communicated that the accused denied the charges as well as any criminal wrongdoing.

The Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs declined to comment on whether or not any measures have been taken against a foreign state due to the case.

“The foreign ministry has no comment on that issue,” said ministry spokesperson Barbro Elm to TT.

Prosecutor Lindstrand is expecting a long and comprehensive investigation and will request that the man remain in custody when the current deadline runs out in two weeks.

Formal charges must be filed by June 18.

The crime of 'refugee espionage' (flyktingspionage) is widespread in Sweden, according to Säpo, with a number of countries committing major resources to gathering information about dissidents who have fled their domestic borders for Sweden.

The crime is considered serious and is viewed as a threat to Sweden's national security.

He has committed espoionage. He has tried to undermine the state.

He is a criminal.

Why has he not already been deported and the Chinese goverment given the complete bill for all costs?

It is about time the Swedish goverment took crimnial activity in Sweden seriously and dealt with it.

We knew the issue earlier even before these two reports have been published . This news and the former report which was published on 4 Jun 09 16:03 CET…. the suspect's country of origin was not mentioned ,however.

This problem of 'Refugee spy' is being identified lately by Sweden national security . This what the dictator government of Ethiopia has been working since last 3 years after the last controversial election .. Specially in Sweden, sending the minority Tigray ethnic groups for intelligences purpose , allocating huge amount of budget to study the background of individual asylum seekers : what they are doing ,wether these applicant are the treat to its regime, wether the reason for the asylum is political… etc …

Any way good news …. Keep working on as this is a thereat to the national security in that peaceful country Sweden !!!!!

Some one from some where !

Please take a time to read what it is about!!! You hear a name of "Islam" and start your rants?

This guy is spy who works for Chinese government. China oppress Uighur Muslims so some of them have fled to Sweden now this guy wanted to spy over these Uighur Muslims. Unfortunately Muslims are systematically oppressed in China, Russia, India ,...where majority are non-Muslims so they are fled to west Europe.

The Swedes and all the rest of the Western Europeans have not seen anything yet....you are just beginning to get a small taste of what the fruits of your extreme liberal and very naive attitudes have in store for you. Wait, it is going to get "better", ha,ha. As more and more non-Swedes and non Europeans are allowed into your fold under the banner of humanitarianism the more crime, more religious extremeism, more treason by "citizens" like this Uyghur you are going to experiance. There will come a time when the people will view the Liberals behind all of this humanitarian open-arms policy as traitors to Sweden and her ethnic Swedish population......

But so what? Infiltrating political and social groups for the purpose of finding out what they are up to is illegal? Since when? It is not like he is stealing state secrets or anyone's intellectual or commercial property. I don't think that we've got all the facts before us yet.

i just have to wonder. why would anyone spend so much time and effort to repeat the SAME warning so many times? i mean after you say..."you should be warned" 20+ times, you think you'd find something else to say.

unless of course, you have absolutely nothing to say. i'm betting on the latter in jimmyjames' case.

I do NOT see China is oppressing her minorities (like muslims) at all.

In contrast, the Chinese government is trying to help them a lot, especially those who live in remote regions.

Ohh yeah powerofkowladge I agree with you .. he should go to university or working with something useful instead of wasting the time.

This kind of people unfortunatly would not understand the truth, and whenever you bring them to the truth they will runn away, its useless to talk or to response them .. leave them becasue they are not going to change the fact that Sweden is Zero - racist !.

China always have its way to send their spy to different countries in different ways. This guy must have been sent by China for spying. Swedish immigration must tighten its immigration policy and must not accept spy like this. Uyghurs are living under Chinese heavy handed policy and you can not treat all the Uyghurs same way because of this Chinese dog. Sweden must punish this guy in Sweden according to Swedish law and must not sent him back to China because he will be honored by his master if sent back.

Sweden surely has lower corruption compared to 3rd world countries and Italy of Berlusconi, but "almost 0%" ?? You could at least read TL news: http://www.thelocal.se/search.php?keywordS...e&type=news

Also which office do you call to get a list of Chinese citizens in Sweden that attend meetings to discuss some issues in a not so CCP-friendly manner?
