What is Membership+ and what are The Local's readers saying about it?

Last year The Local launched Membership+, a new subscription plan with features including premium newsletters, extra podcasts and full ad-free access to The Local’s entire network.

And we’ve been delighted with the response. More than 1,200 people are now Membership+ subscribers.

What is Membership+?

By signing up for Membership+ you get a lot more from The Local.

For example, Sweden in Focus Extra is a weekly podcast that provides more in-depth coverage on everything from Swedish politics and immigration laws to the Swedish language and seasonal traditions. You also get early access to the ad-free full-length edition of the main weekend podcast.

Membership+ also means you get a bigger selection of newsletters as well as the full text of articles delivered straight to your inbox for any topics you select in your preferences, a feature that readers have really welcomed.

Thanks to the success of Membership+ in its first year we are working on adding additional features in 2025 based on suggestions from subscribers.

What do subscribers say?

Since we started Membership+ lots of readers have been in touch to let us know how much they appreciate it. Here are just a few of the comments we’ve received:

“The Local provides me with news and information about my new home country that would otherwise be less visible to me. The fact that The Local is well researched, written and presented is what nudged me to get Membership+.”

“The Local has been very helpful. The recent stories about being an accompanying partner really hit a nerve (and turned me into a Membership+ subscriber). I’m also interested in political coverage and here the podcasts are very helpful. It’s a whole new world out there! Thank you for doing such a good job!”

“This is by far the most informative (and affordable) outlet about Sweden in English. It is like a one-stop shop where I can find all the basic info I need. I also want to thank you specifically for the podcast – it is a fantastic and intense dose (like a healthy power drink) of info, and your light sense of humour is incredible.”

How Membership+ improves The Local's coverage

Without the support of all our members we would not have been able to devote as many resources as we did this month to proposals to change Sweden's citizenship laws.

But we’re always looking to invest even more in covering the issues that matter to immigrants in Sweden and Membership+ gives us the stability we need to dig deeper into immigrants’ rights, work visas, residency permits and all the daily news that impacts all our lives here.

By joining Membership+ you’ll help further ensure that we can keep working with you to figure out the best ways to navigate the continuing flood of new laws and ramped-up rhetoric in 2025.
