A 33-year-old man from Västerås in central Sweden has been arrested for alleged crimes in breach of copyright legislation. Local media report that police uncovered up to 10,000 films hidden in the man's cellar.

Västerås police were acting on a tip off from the Swedish Anti-Piracy Agency (Svenska Antipiratbyrån -APB), a private copyright advocacy group.

"He was collected for interrogation and after that I took the decision to arrest him. He sat in custody for around a day and has now been released," district prosecutor Fredrik Ingblad told newspaper Vestmanlands Läns Tidning.

The 33-year-old is believed to be part of a clandestine file sharing network, but there are currently no further suspects.

"We shall have to await the results of the technical investigation. As the case in question concerns a server there could be other file sharers either here in Sweden or abroad, it is too early to tell," Fredrik Inglad said.

The 33-year-old denies all the allegations and told police under interrogation that he was under the impression that the server contained computer games.

The Anti-Piracy Agency claimed on their website that the server did in fact contain copyrighted material - to the tune of 90 terabytes.

"We regard the man to be one of the leading figures behind the 'warez scene' syndicate which is responsible for all pirate copying. The police operation will help to stem the flow of pirated material onto the internet," said Henrik Pontén, an ABP lawyer.

The APB also added that the man will be served with a demand for compensation, with the amount based on the stock of 10,000 films.

Who's willing to bet this is going to be treated more serious that the counterfeiting ring that was recently busted in Sweden (related thelocal article) ?

Why? because big content has Sweden's law services by the short and curlies and wants to make an example of people like this heinous/crime mastermind/dastardly/ young man.

Making fake money... thats not to bad, depriving the cartels of money via movies and music... thats a big NO NO.

Well under the guidelines of American copyright law they will be seeking between US$30,000 to US$150,000 per "wilful violation." that equates to $300M - $1.5B do you think hes got that stashed away in his basement?

He was from the Warez scene so is very unlikely to of been selling what he was collecting. To do so would lead to his ostracisation from his own community.

Sounds to me like he was a 'dump', a place that a group would backup and store all of the material they have pirated over the years. I wonder what legal arguments that will be used in this case. Is widespread sharing of copyrighted material the biggest crime, is large scale ownership the crime? Is it the organised approach that these groups take the crime? If he is merely a conduit for the material is he at all liable or is he protected by the same EU laws that protect ISPs from being legally liable for their user's actions?

Of course courts are hardly close to being up to date on these legal nuances so I expect something less specific and child like in the justices response to this person's crimes, whatever they may be.

"We regard the man to be one of the leading figures behind the 'warez scene' syndicate which is responsible for all pirate copying. The police operation will help to stem the flow of pirated material onto the internet," said Henrik Pontén, an ABP lawyer.

Surely APB doesnt really believe this? Wasn't this the same organisation that once said the the TPB was the source of all pirated material on the internet? Some people need an education into how the warez scene actually works......wikipedia is probably a good starting point! It will definitely minimize the risk for such embarassing statements!

@emil_sweden, Since when have the anti piracy morons bothered with actual facts?

basically, they say something and most people without a clue will eat it up, the few of us who see the BS are largely ignored or our voices are drowned out by the "we are losing millions of jobs" propaganda drum.

They have the politicians, judges, authorities and the police in their back pocket. The corruption they have spread across the inner workings of the judicial system is nothing short of audacious. It's the breath-taking arrogance of these multi-corporations that treat the rest of us hard working wage slaves with cynical contempt. The police need to find their morality and start making an effort to catch the real criminals who are involved with human trafficking, drugs and arms dealing, sex exploitation of minors, violence, intimidation, torture and murder, which is endangering the lives of innocent people. The internet can expose the corporations for the greedy, corrupt, callous, cowards they are. The more people who can expose their greed and lust for power the sooner these corporations will be held accountable for their morally bankrupt actions.
