Malmö mayor Ilmar Reepalu conceded that he has not been sufficiently well informed about the vulnerable situation faced by Jews after meeting with community leaders on Thursday.

All citizens deserve equal protection under the law.
It does not matter if you are a Muslim who supports the Taliban.
It does not matter if you are a Jew who supports Israel.
It does not matter if you are a Swede who supports Nazis.
Reepalu is a classic racist.
Of course you don't see it as a problem. You're kind never does.
Do you not see the danger here? The Mayor of Malmo, the third largest city in Sweden, publicly condones violence ("they have brought this on themselves because of their Zionist beliefs") against a small group of citizens. What crime has been committed by the Jews of Malmo? Freedom of Thought? Freedom of Speech? Freedom of Expression? When did it become a crime to be a Zionist? In a democratic society these freedoms are to be celebrated, not suppressed with violence.
Reepalu is a racist.
These human beings just want to live in peace, let them be.
Let's attack random muslims on the street because SOMEONE ELSE has certain politics?
you are an idiot. Like medication idiot, as I mentioned before.
Violent muslims attack Jews who wear yamaka on the streets. Because the MAY support Israeli politics.
Whereas waves of thousands who walked with flags of Hezbollah on the streets of Sweden and masks on their faces are just fine!
Let me attack every Turk on the streets of Stockholm because I disagree with their Kurd treatment or Cyprus politics! Let's get to a position of power and support physically beating up every idiot with assumptions of conspiracies on every corner - beacause he may support political views that I disagree with, you imbecile!
No doubt that Reepalu is a scum-sucking politician in search of votes.
That said, it is disingenuous to claim that the Mayor of a city and the actions of the police are completely disconnected. Malmo has a mayor who preaches that the Jews have brought the violence upon themselves, and in turn the police have done little to protect the Jews. How do you think the police would have reacted if the Mayor had preached that violence of all kinds is unacceptable, and then stood are-in-arm with the Jews of Malmo? Do you really believe that the police would have allowed the violence to continue?
Reepalu is a scum-sucking politician and a racist.
Were the Jewish demonstrations legal? If so, are the Jews not entitled to police protection?
Trowbridge, do you not believe in freedom of speech?
In the USA, Nazi organizations stage protests and marches, primarily in Jewish areas around Chicago. They are protected by the ACLU as well as the police. They have the right to express their opinions freely without risk of harm or intimidation. Do not the Jews of Malmo deserve the same measure of protection?
If I understand you correctly, you renounce violence against all Jews, even Zionists.
However, Israel is doing horrible things for poor Palestinians, I believe that any person has heart can't accept to see kids getting killed in Gaza. That is totally unfair to humanity.
Most recently, the Mossad (Intelligence of Israel) has killed a Palestinian person in Dubai, and used European passports. What kind of respect is that???
Two thoughts:
First, the actions of Israel have nothing whatsoever to do with Swedish citizens who happen to be Jewish.
Second, at an international level spy v spy is a very dangerous and deadly game. In the very same week that the Mossad(allegedly) killed a Palestinian(terrorist?), an Iranian military plane forced down a civilian Kyrgyzstani airplane and removed Abdol Malek Rigi, the head of the Jund Allah, a separatist Iranian group. I am sure that the Iranians consider him a terrorist. And, I am sure at this very moment he is being treated to the very best torture that the current Iranian regime has to offer.
...This refugee's testimony is yet another example of how Palestinian leaders, writers and refugees themselves have begun to speak out in recent years and openly blame the Arab leadership for the creation of the Arab refugee problem. Mufid describes a large departure to Lebanon from Israel, which led to the creation of "11 or 15 refugee camps." He does not place the blame on Israel. As Palestinian Media Watch has previously reported, other recent Palestinian accounts likewise describe a deliberate exit from Israel under orders by Arab leaders, which contradicts the Palestinian leadership's charge that the hundreds of thousands of Arabs who left in 1948 were expelled by Israel...

First of all, I have no idea how did you concludes that I meant anything about Swedish Jews. re-read my comment again and think twice before you troll.
Unfortunately most people can't distinguish between Jews, Israelis and Zionists. Zionists and Israelis are not bothered any way because they can take the advantage of interpreting anything anti-Israel and anti-Zionist as anti Semis racism. So-called Muslim extremists and neo-Nazis are not bothered either because they can attack Jews under the name of fighting with Zionists and Israelis!! It seems a win situation for extremists in all sided and a loss for other majority.
I agree 100% with this.
I have a comparison. First, I must say that I don't agree with the violence, any kind, whatever it is towards jews, christians or muslims. Furthermore, I am also against insults, name callings, wich is to me violence as much as physical harrasment.
Having said that, here is my comparison.
We know that hundreds of jews from Malmo went demonstrating in favor of Israel invasion of Lebanon. We also know that:
- They are lot of muslims in Malmo, probably Palestinians and Leannesses
- We know that, around the world, the public opinion was quite against the invasion made by Israel
-We know that there have been tensions in Malmo before
So, I agree with the Mayor when he states "Instead they hold a demonstration on Stortorget, which can send the wrong signals."
So, now the hundred of Jews are doing PR, (some would call it "Zionist PR, which is ok) by crying like babies and trying to make Sweden all racist. Sincerely, I don't think they are helping their cause. Swedes are not Stupid. In fact, what the Mayor said is probably the opinion not only of most of Sweden, but the rest of the world. People have had enough of the victimization and the crying to mommy.
Ok, here is my comparison. Imagine a town in Texas where the, lets say, the 20 000 inhabitants are openly homophobic. SO, hundred of gays decide to go in that town, dressed as Borat and dancing on "Dancing Queen" waving the rainbow flag and showing signs that say "Gay is the new manly".
Then, a couple of people from that town start throwing eggs at the gays and call them "fagget" and "Cock sucker".
I do not agree with the eggs throwing neither the name calling. Still, I can openly say that the hundred gays looked for trouble. Following that, the hundred gays complain to the media in Canada and tell that they will all have to immigrate in Canada because Americans are homophobic.
I am not against demonstrating and the right to freedom, etc, but there are some limits.
I conclude: the hundreds jews that cry like babies looked for trouble, they made trouble, they worsened the tensions in Malmo and are now trying to make Swedes feel bad and feel guilt.
But the Jews will realize that the guilt coming from Hitler and his collabos is diminishing day after day. This means they will have to stop using stratagems and the zionist PR to justified their illegal wars and inhumane colonization in Gaza.
Either way the Mayor better watch out or he could find himself being hunted down by dodgy fellows with stolen passports.
The critical issue here is not whether Israel is right or wrong. That is a debate for another time and place. The issue here is the protection of a core tenet of every democratic country: the right of a group of people to congregate and express their opinions(right or wrong) free from intimidation and violence.
The purpose of these freedoms is to protect minorities from the tyranny of the majority. The shame of Reepalu is that he didn't protect democracy, but instead pandered to the mob.
"For all we know these Jews do not even care about the policies that Israel creates and implements. But the sad reality is they are branded because of their religion."
But the hundreds of human beings who demonstrated back in January 2009 do care about the policies of Israel, and it happens that they are Jews.
This is roots of the huge tensions that we are witnessing. The Mayor of Malmo is correct to associate them as Zionists. They are!
"Either way the Mayor better watch out or he could find himself being hunted down by dodgy fellows with stolen passports."
Yeah, this is what terrorist zionists do. When does the USA take the decision to put the Zionists on the terrorist list? When they realize that the Zionist use the USA as their bitche.
http://www.france24.com/en/node/4937678
The kind of anti-Jewish rhetoric and reporting in the media might lessen if Jews actually started to recognise who their friends are. Mutual support will help to win out in the end.
It's nice to have a mayor that's so clued in to what is happening in his own town.
hehe, so you are convinced that "homophobic" means fear of homosexuals. Or maybe You would make a more appropriate comparison bringing in discussion the Wootton Bassett. Google it.
Then everybody is commenting about Jews, or Muslims. A citizen is first a person who has a name like Itzak, Gulderstein, Einstein or Ibrahim or Mustafa. Shortly my point is f..c all religions, ban them all. They bring only more fuel on to fire.
hehe! You are a smart guy: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/onthefrontline/6931015/Wootton-Bassett-march-Gordon-Brown-warns-it-would-be-completely-inappropriate.html
Yes, you got my idea. I don't know if they finally march in that small town, but let's say they did and some drunk horny British countrymen throw eggs at them (they missed most of them, still, the wanting was there) and call them Muslim rats (some said "Muslim cats, still, who want to be call pussies?) Then the muslim demonstrators start crying and call the media and say "we will have to move in Saudi Arabia" because Wootton Bassett and the entire UK are full of anti-muslims.
I am neither Jewish or Muslim, just a white chap who wants to drink some beers, and all those stories about religion are a pain in my ass, everybody asses. 20 years ago, no one had heard of zionism. Now, they have been unveiled.
Anyway, it is always a pure delice to come on The Local ans read the Zionist comments, like krrodman's. I have respect for him, he believes strongly in Zionism, he knows what is Zionism and he is a Zionist. For the non Zionist, when you have time, go read comments on the Jerusalem post, and you will find quite crazy Zionists that will make you forget that the bad guys are with Al Qiada.
"And once again, the cowards in Europe, appeasers to the bitter end, are allowing Jews to be abused by the most bigoted, racist, intolerant religion in the world - ISLAM. I thought you would have learned your lessons from Hitler. Sometimes you have to meat intolerance head on with direct and decisive action. You can not be tolerant of intolerance. ISLAM is a cancer and it will engulf the cradle of Western civilization if you don't get your heads out of the sand."
Well done pro Reepalu posters here, you have played your part in perfectly reconstructing the early days of the most obnoxious regime in the history of the world. Keep it up and you'll be invading Poland by Tuesday.
@dsc and his ilk
The comment you found worth repeating is very strange! Because racism is clearly condemned in Muslim's book. It shows the ignorance of the person who believe in that comment. It's like saying Christians don't believe in God!! Now you can keep repeating lies but you can't make a lie true by repeating it several times. Go back home and relax because I'm sure any religion or moral code you believe, doesn't accept lying!
His initial comments citing the politics of Israel are inexcusable. He should resign the office of Mayor. He's too out of touch to serve his constituency.
The right to assemble and protest without interference or intimidation is one of the core rights of a democracy. It separates the democracies of the west from every totalitarian regime and theocracy in the world. For comparison just think about how the government of Iran is dealing with internal protest.
And the key point here is that it does not matter if the protesters are right or wrong. It does not matter if they are Jews and support Israel. It does not matter if they are Muslim and support the Taliban. And, most importantly, it does not matter if the government in power likes it or does not like it. It is the responsibility of the government to protect the protesters from harm, and allow lawful assembly.
The fact that Reepalu hates Israel's position toward the Palestinians in Gaza is IRRELEVANT. The fact that the Jews marched in support of Israel is IRRELEVANT. As the Mayor of Malmo it is his responsibility to uphold the law and defend the core principles of democracy.
Reepalu has failed in his primary responsibility as an elected official in a democracy. He is an embarrassment. He needs to go.
I am also 1000% sure and trust my MUSLIM community as egrets, ungrateful and naturally violent breeds to attack and dominate Sweden soon when we have had our concepts in place.
Despite the fact that they are afraid could that have led to their failure even to the office of the Duped-up Mal mo MAYOR and Swedish Police to protect their CITIZENS that they term Jewish, Zionist? to hell Sweden and the mayor that has publicly brought out their hidden agenda.......
I just got my Citizenship as an Asylum seeker with Good intention but there are millions of us (Muslims) here that are sent out to get strategy on how to turn it to an Islamic State and pay back its citizens the lives that has been lost for their sake in Muslim countries.......
"I am a Palestine" - are you the land of Palestine or what is the story? If yes then, Israeli believe that you belong to them :)
Come down, you guys are the poorest on this planet and getting killed like chicken. As a matter of fact we love you not just feel sorry for you
Sweden is far from being an "Arabialand".
You have much much more ethnic muslims in Canada.
"Over the past 12 months, there have been more than 300 anti-Semitic incidents in Canada, or nearly one every day. Four synagogues have been the targets of arson attacks, Jewish day schools have received bomb threats, and there have been numerous property crimes and hate propaganda directed against Jews and their institutions. The most serious incident occurred in July, when David Rosenzweig, an Orthodox Jew, was murdered outside a kosher restaurant in Toronto by a neo-Nazi skinhead.
Jewish students on Canadian campuses have also been particularly hard-hit, with a string of anti-Israel and anti-Semitic incidents. Take, for example, Montreal's Concordia University. In September, a riot broke out at the school forcing the cancellation of a speech by former Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. During the melee, a Holocaust survivor was physically assaulted and kicked in the groin." http://www.aish.com/jw/s/48890717.html
So, Canada is much much more antisemite than Sweden. So, why the Zionists are aiming at Sweden? Guess what, the Zionists did not like the fact that Sweden rewarded Goldstone and dind't like the fact that Reinfeld cancelled a visit to Israel when Israel was crying because Sweden would not close down the Aftonbladet.
The Zionist attitude is creating antisemitism, that's the bottom line. I am not and will never be antisemite, but I know that uneducated people can't make the difference between zionism and the jews who just want peace and are peaceful.
Are you sure you are two different persons?! ;)
just another proof of the deterioration of sweden as a democracy.
mind your own business. When Mossad use fake passports to kill people who have different view on Israel, I do not think that we can call it "allowing them their own freedom of speech".
Israel doesn't live in the dark age, but 3000 years ago.
So, what is your point?
Malmo mayor has the right to its opinion. You talk like if a Jew was killed n Mamo. No one was killed, no one ever needed hospital care, whatsoever.
The Mayor doesn't need to stop sleeping because hundred zionists looked for trouble by demonstrating in favor of Israel illegal invasion of Lebanon while children were killed under the Israeli army.
Cry baby, cry, but mama won't come to sign you another lullaby. Mama has sung to you a lot since 1948, but now mama wants to sleep.
you have a lot to learn about freedon of speech and correct behaviour of mayors.
jews have the right to protest and demonstrate in favour of whatever they think is just and right. including what they think are legitimate acts of self defence.
if you want to be proud of your country, if sweden is indeed your country at all, you should let minorities say freely what they think even if you do not agree with them.
your comments towrads me are seen by me as part of the anti-democratic tendencies that are so wide spread in sweden today.
how can a country that regard itself a democracy allow intimidation of minorities only for saying what they feel and think?
in israel you could demonstrate against israeli policy as long as you are not violent. what good for is your arrogance and condensending attitude if you cannot have a country that you can be proud of?
read your newspapers and see what i mean. sweden is not a country to be proud of whatever you think.
israel is not perfect of course but at least we defend our democracy against its enemies. you ceased to do that .
For phuck's sake, I cannot get beyond the atrocious grammar in the headline to make my way to the article.
The Local - Sweden's News in Jibberish, indeed.
PS: The author should be lashed with a wet noodle. The editor, on the other hand, should have his hands removed to prevent further crimes against language.
The Jews leave and you and the Moslems live happily ever after.
Just like the Sudan. 3 million killed since 1989 when the Moslem terr govt came to power.
It's outrageous! It has to be said that that's what it is. Outrageous, this condonation & justification of and expressing of sympathy and understanding for "Hets mot folkgrupp" in this case incitement to threats and violent anti-Semitic hooliganism by His Worship the Mayor of Malmö would have been acceptable under the Nuremburg Laws but is not acceptable by current Swedish Law.
Today is Purim
Let's transpose the same scenario to let's say London or New York constituencies - Boris Johnson the Mayor of London saying such and not taking enormous flack - of course he is not politically inept and would certainly not come up with that kind of ignorance and nonsense. Ken Livingston the anti-Semite could not have got away with it either - and of course it's out of the question, Michael Bloomberg of New York saying such - that the Jews in America - New York, Florida, wherever in the Diaspora, were "asking for it" for standing behind Israel tidying up and putting a stop to the nonsense rocket fire issuing from Gaza that had been targeting residents in Sdereot without pause for eight years, getting them to run for cover upon hearing the 15 seconds warning siren…..?
This goes back to over a year ago:
http://www.israpundit.com/2008/?p=10855#more-10855
What is significant is that it's Mona Sahlin and not the overall authority in the land that's come up with helpful criticism and suggested a fruitful outcome through a dialogue of understanding - considering that the Muslims too are in some ways also in positions similar to that of the Jews - the Jewish positions under Nazi unfriendliness in Germany of the 1930s…..though the Swedish politicians of today are lining up to support the erection of yet another mosque in Rinkeby, fishing for the Muslim vote.
But in today's Sweden of 2010 - the Social Democrats who have traditionally - since Olof Palme times anyway been more supportive of the Palestinian cause and less so of the Israeli positions, has since Palme made some amends particularly under Göran Persson who introduced this:
http://www.google.com/#hl=en&q=Goran+Persson%3A+Tell+Ye+Your+Children&fp=c5aa4278f68e4a4
And now at least Mona Sahlin is showing some signs of being more even-handed and understands that the enormity of what happened cannot be trivialised….
Me, a Zionist??? My friends would cry with laughter.
My singular concern is for civil liberties and constitutional democracy. My posts would have read exactly the same if the civil liberties of neo- Nazis were curtailed in Skokie, Illinois, or if Islamic students were denied the right to wear a birka to school. The rights apply to everyone equally, including Jews.
Minorities must always be protected from the tyranny of the majority.
"I may disagree with what you say, but I shall defend to the death your right to say it."
Voltaire
When we remembered the old Skåne County
We hung our Nyckelharpa.
But there our new tomentoors asked us for songs,
Our tormentors demanded songs of joy;
They said, "Sing us one of the songs of the Vikings!"
As Krrodman has been saying from Day One: We are all entitled to the full protection of the law.
It would be insurrection from the third force that is already amongst us. Insurrection from country to country and from coast to coast. Not that we can compare the operation in Gaza with the war on Terrorism launched by President George "Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists" W. Bush.
The Mayor's absolute logic is scary: so refugee Afghans in the lands that have soldiers decimating their civilian populations in Afghanistan (allegedly as tragic collateral damage) should be entitled to harass citizens of those countries in which they are refugees. Ditto the Pakistanis, Iraqis, etc etc. unto North Korea. And the two Million Iranians who live in California alone perhaps should be entitled to cut down a few trees should the US consign the glory of the Iranian Navy to the bottom of the Persian Gulf as the final burial ground after a week of allied bombing….
Whatever's said in Malmö reverberates through the airwaves:
http://www.google.com/intl/en/#num=100&hl=en&q=Ilmar+Reepalu+and+anti-Semitism
Yet, the Social Democrat strongman of Malmö is not yet as bad as Ken Livingstone:
http://www.google.com/#hl=en&q=Ken+Livingstone+the+anti-semite&fp=c5aa4278f68e4a4
it seems that they think they could remain an isolated "white" island surrounded by jihadist countries and will be a vasal country of iran and syria.
look at what certain left wing swedes consider as allies-
iran, syria, the palestinian authority, hammas's gazan dictatorship, egypt that any second can fall into the hands of the muslim brothers, lybia with its insane gadhaffi guy that declared 'jihad' agaisnt the swiss nation because they are not muslim enough, and the saudi nation which cut hands of thieves,
the question still remain do swedish left support bin laden's war against the west. i will not be surprised if some swedes find reasons to support terrorism against western targets ( as long as they are not swedish leftist establishments.
and who is the swedish left enemies? the jews who they helped the germans to exterminate 65 years ago, the americans who saved the world from the hands of the most horrible dicatator ever ( hitler i mean, do swedes learn abvout hin at school or is it now a non issue in sweden?).
everything is justified in order to get some quiet from islamic terror and buy some time.
was all for education:

Please don't misunderstand me. The issues you constantly want to talk about (Zionism/Israel/Arabs/Jews/Islam, good or bad?), are very important. They are just not related to the story of the day. Especially this story. On behalf of all the people who only want to discuss the story above this forum, Go Away.
If the pro/anti-Zionist brigade didn't read The Local, the hit count would drop to a ridiculous low and The Local would lose advertisers. After years of existence, The Local knows exactly what it is doing, rousing the rabble in such a fashion and hosting what is nothing less than hate speech at times.
It is reckless and irresponsible journalism.
As for my own feelings on this matter, I have concluded that The Local does have a bit of an anti-semitic undertone. How else would one explain this consistent douchebaggery?
One last word for the gallery o' peanuts: Not all Muslims are Arab terrorists. Not all Jews are Zionists. To paint each party with a broad sweep of a brush sullies any form of discrimination and hate crime, regardless of political leanings.
Perhaps, one day, the editorial staff of The Local will realize this and cease with the promotion of such vile thoughts. But given its complete inability to write a headline, my hopes are not high.
I'd like to say that the opinions of Reepalu are the exception, not the rule, but my experience and observations say otherwise.
So much for flying the flag of righteousness in the free world.
"They are just not related to the story of the day."?
Then what are they related to?
Please feel free to de-limit yourself; you don't need a permit from me or from R. Crumb for the simple resaon that it's a democracy in which even you are free to talk more sense or non-sense
"Israel is not a secular state. Its citizens are afforded none of the gurarantees to equality and rights - and the freedom from religious interference in their personal lives - protected by the United States Constitution and also taken for granted in modern European societies.
"The ultimate distinction in Israel, however, is not the one among the various streams of Judaism, but rather the legally and politically structuring differentation between Jews and non-Jews. The rigid distinction between persons who are Jewish and persons who are not, defines the limits and possibilities of an individuals's personal and family life; it also provides the basic logic defining spaces and places in Israel and the occupied territories, articulating insides and outsides, how outsides can turn in, and insides can turn out."
"There are two different administrative and legal structures in place in the occupied territories: Jewish settlers are subject to Israeli CIVIL law, whereas the native Palestinians are subject to Israeli MILITARY law. Such forms of legalized discrimination are not restricted to the occupied territories; they are built directly into the political and institutional frameworks of Israel itself...."
