Sweden's Princess Madeleine, third in line to the Swedish throne, will have to wait before tying the knot to her beau Jonas Bergström, Queen Silvia confirmed on Tuesday, according to the Aftonbladet tabloid.

When the couple became engaged last autumn, it was made clear that the wedding would be delayed until after elder sister Crown Princess Victoria had been married to Daniel Westling. The Crown Princess' high profile wedding takes place on June 19th in Stockholm.

Jonas Bergström told news agency TT when announcing the couple's engagement that their wedding was planned for the late autumn or during the winter of 2010.

But it has now been made clear that the couple will in fact not take their nuptials this year, amid widespread Swedish media reports that indicate that couple are going through a rough patch in their relationship.

"Unfortunately, there will be no wedding this year. It goes without saying that there is a lot going on right now... I think that Madeleine has the right to a quiet time at her own wedding," Queen Silvia told the newspaper.

The announcement in August 2009 that Madeleine was due to follow Victoria down the aisle took many royal watchers in Sweden by surprise, coming so soon after her big sister's announcement.

Princess Madeleine, who is 197th in line to the British throne through distant family links to Queen Victoria, and Jonas Bergström, who is a lawyer from the exclusive Stockholm suburb of Djursholm, have been together for eight years.

Lest hope Madeleine & Jonas will pay the own way and stop being a leech to the society but that's 2 much to hope 4. And it seems the local is buying in to the crap as well. What is so exclusive about Djursholm?

Peropaco - bah humbug you grump.

@peropaco: How can you utter such insensitive gibberish against the Royal family??? All real swedes must take great care to preserve this great institution. You are probably a social democrat, or some other such disgusting, bottom scraping, lowlife. It is you and your social democrat ilk who are leeches to society, and who prefer to live on "bidrag" instead of doing a day's honest work. Go wash your face peropaco!

@cbeynch.. LOooooL. Me a social democrat? hahahaha. I am doing an honest day work in my retreat in Forte dei Marmi and I will not get into a bitch fight with you about this. The Bernadottes are there because people with poor skills and thinking you know, low self esteem, abusive parents/partners are the ones who feel the need to look up to someone they call royal. Oh, in the case of the bernadotes you will have to look down giving their diminutive height. Heja to the Gollum family. ;-)

I thought this article would bring all the anti european culture weevils out from the dung, to spit forth their sneaky and snide remarks. Jealous and envious of any form of heritage, elite and culture. I guess they have none from where they emanate.

Seems if someone is a worm, then they should surely look up in order to find some elite cultural heritage to worship. I emanate from France and we figured it out a long time a go. Puss-Kram :-)

The Local has put a very interesting spin on this

The Swedish press are reporting that the couple may be on the verge of splitting up and haven't been seen at public events together since last year
08:26 April 14, 2010 by izbz
@obeynch

Best is to have them both married at the same day....save alot of taxpayers' money, good for media....and lots of publicity if that's what they are looking for. 2 birds in one stone.

Not happy to have my tax contributions to be spend this way, rather be more happy if the money is use for social workand the homeless. Anyway royal family are loaded. Whatever they get for monthly alllowance and expenses is much more than majority of the people living and earning per month for a whole year.

Me, I'm no Swede and no royalist, but I reckon the tourist revenues from the wedding hype could be offset against the public cost.

There are two questions here. Do you want to be governed this way? What are the costs and benefits? Don't mix them up.

Your royal family is not so expensive - you would still have to keep the palaces up if they weren't there to decorate them. They aren't monsters. There are serious questions about the wisdom of a congenital aristocracy, but the same questions could be asked about media barons, I guess.
11:27 April 14, 2010 by cbeynch
@izbz: I respectfully disagree. I see absolutely nothing wrong with two separate Royal weddings. Swedish culture, tradition and history warrant no expenses shunned to uphold this tradition. A lot more tax payer money could be saved by offering LESS "social" expenditure of the kind you describe, and instead teach all these people on the dole to work for a living. Look at any Swedish city today. There's plenty of 'klotter' waiting to be cleaned up. Why don't we start by forcing people on the welfare rolls to start cleaninig up? But do not mess with the budget for the Royal family.

Yaaaaawn - who actually gives a toss what the royals do?

@peropaco "what's so exclusive about djursholm?"

well, i was once told by a fourteen year old from djursholm that she lived in the "best neighborhood" and that she was "the cleanest child" in her school. so perhaps it is this cleanest child standard that keeps djursholm exclusive! didn't one of the other posts say peropaco should wash his/her face? see, it's that clean theme again...

furthermore, i agree with peropaco. poo poo on elitism. there's so much to love in lovely sweden, but i'm also discovering i so love french attitude! it's so very often just what i was thinking! vive la france! :)

As an American the only three characters in European history I can identify with are Marie Anntionette, Attilla the Hun and Lord Nelson.

I think they would say let's have a big Wedding and show off the country to the tourists.

197th in line to the British throne because of family links? My god are they all inbred?

Be British, be sincere and be bold »

"Sweden is a veritable smorgåsbord for UK business. I see our work as a bit like a kind of dragon’s den for both for larger and smaller British companies. It is about matching the UK companies, not with cash, but with Swedish market opportunities." READ »
