Vilks arson suspects remanded into custody

Published: 18 May 10 10:37 CET | Print version

Two brothers suspected of targeting controversial Swedish artist Lars Vilks' home have been remanded into custody for attempted arson.

The two brothers, aged 19 and 21, are believed to have attacked Vilks' house in the village of Nyhamnsläge in southern Sweden on Friday night with gasoline-filled plastic bottles. A window in the house was smashed and a curtain was set on fire.

In addition, attempts were made to build two fires along the façade. The artist himself was not at home at the time.

The 21-year-old was arrested late on Saturday and the 19-year-old on Sunday morning.

"He is of Swedish nationality but originally from Kosovo...He was unknown to the police so far," Skåne district police spokesman Calle Pärsson told new agency AFP regarding the 21-year-old.

The attempted arson followed an attack on Vilks during a lecture at Uppsala University last Tuesday, where he claims to have been head-butted in the chest.

Three suspects, two men and one woman, arrested after the alleged assault were later released after several hours in custody.

The artist's website has meanwhile also been targeted by hackers in recent days with his webmaster referring to the repeated intrusions as a "game of cat and mouse".

Visitors to vilks.net on Tuesday morning were greeted with a message saying that the site administrators are "working hard to get the page back on its feet", claiming that the hacks originate from an Islamic group calling itself Al Qataari.

Lars Vilks courted global attention in 2007 when the Swedish regional daily Nerikes Allehanda published his satirical cartoon depicting Muhammad as a dog to illustrate an editorial on the importance of freedom of expression.

The cartoon prompted protests by Muslims in the town of Örebro in central Sweden, where the newspaper is based, while Egypt, Iran and Pakistan made formal complaints.

An Al-Qaeda front organisation then offered $100,000 to anyone who murdered Vilks - with an extra $50,000 if his throat was slit - and $50,000 for the death of Nerikes Allehanda editor-in-chief Ulf Johansson.

The protests in Sweden echoed the uproar in Denmark caused by the publication in September 2005 of 12 drawings focused on Islam, including one showing the prophet Muhammad with a turban in the shape of a bomb.

In March, US citizen Colleen LaRose, who called herself "JihadJane" in a YouTube video, was charged by US authorities with conspiring to kill Vilks after seven suspected co-plotters were arrested in Ireland.

I know no Swede wants a fight, but one is comming like it or not. If you don't resist your way of life and culture are going to disappear, the jihadis laugh at the idea of live and let live, not pushing back will only embolden them. How about an apology from the Mosque these criminals attend?

Oh and I didn't like Lars Vilks cartoon, a dog is a noble beast and shouldn't be insulted like that.
15:17 May 18, 2010 by Proud-Muslim
Lars Wilks is accountable for creating criminals . The boys who attacked empty home had no criminal records.

Bush has created many terrorists and lars would create some criminals and also putting the life of Swedes atrisk. Muslims are victim of these extremists that is why everyday around 50 Muslims die in the hand of these extremists and they have no logic or religion and this is dangerous for other nation as well.

You need to understand the mentality of european vs Asian Muslims. we are both living in two different culture and life standards. for you it is ok to create cartoon of anything . because you are European you have this mentality but for Asian Muslims it is total different and extremists and politician takes benefits from this .

Even thought Lars Wilks is doing for business, he poor education and mentality really sucks!
16:07 May 18, 2010 by Dazzler
You sir are a fvcking moron. Its everyone's fault but the perpetrators eh?

"You need to understand the mentality of european vs Asian Muslims. we are both living in two different culture and life standards. "

No sh!t !!! So how about adapting to your new home instead of pushing your backwards ass dogma on us mentally fit non believers!

@ proud muslim.

Dont use the word Asian muslims. It stereotypes every other Asian person.
17:53 May 18, 2010 by peropaco
These sewer hairy tail rats will not rest until they kill him. The ploce will gives these two roaches a harsh admonition and let them go free in a couple days claiming stress related factors forced them to try to burn someones home down. In Sweden you try to kill someone and you get a free ride and a slap on the wrist. Dont pay taxes and you will feel the weight of the law.
19:00 May 18, 2010 by travels
Reading Proud-Muslim's comments you can see the twisted mentality, as Dazzler pointed out, it's never the perpetrator's fault, but, like in this case, the cartoonist (or others) "made them do it". These people will never adapt to life in the west with their backwards primitive mentality, keep letting them in and by the time you want your country back it'll be too late. They think it's the west's obligation to adapt to their mentality when in reality they should adapt to west's if they come to live in it, they are the guests in your "home", if they don't like it here they can go to the primitive countries where their primitive thinking is the norm.
19:05 May 18, 2010 by Griggy
These "boys" are adults and are either responsible for their own actions under the law, or they would appear to be psychopaths. Either way, if no other reason they should be given help and/or locked up for their own protection as well as protecting the rest of normal society.

@ Proud muslim.

Your views sucks man. For you criminals are those who speak freely, and not those who go on do such things for crappy reasons. When do you people come out of this victim mentalities. And for goodness sake don't use the word Asian to yourself when you want to spill such venomous ideas. People here don't know how to differentiate an Pakistani from other south Asian, and whatever you say under asian terms affects all buddhists, sikhs, Hindus and christians in Asia.

And regarding your comment of mentality of Asian muslims, I think the mentality is really insane. Buddha has been drawn in all sorts and some statues have been destroyed by your fellow muslims in afghanistan years back, But are the buddhists doing the same as you do with innocent men and women? Are they revenging on other communities? The same goes with hindus, christians, sikhs, jains from the subcontinent. Every of their gods are drawn in any form liked, but never they are taking violence to revenge.

The next time don't say Asian Muslim, say your nationality instead. Am sure it wont be anything other than the country with letter P . And spare the rest of the people from south asian subcontinent from mass stereotyping.

Lars Vilks has turned out to be a gift to international security services. His cheese in the mouse trap impersonation has drawn in celebratory terrorists such as "Jihad Jane" and supporters, wannabees like the mad axeman and this pair of arsonists, and probably plenty of others, who are now well on the anti-terror radar, and now a risk to any terrorist organisation they come into contact with

Is it too far fetched to say SÄPO is perfectly happy with the current situation? They don't have to go hunting for terrorists, they just wait outside Lars Vilks house, and pick them up later.
20:20 May 18, 2010 by travels
Also, about Proud-Muslim comment.. "You need to understand the mentality of european vs Asian Muslims", sure, like Arabian Muslims, Indonesian Muslims, eastern European Muslims or misc Muslims don't share the same primitive, twisted mentality, lets just say Muslims and call it like it is.

given your problem adpating to europe and the west why don't you go back where you came from ?

You Swedes better start treating muslims with more respect. You are dhimmi and it won't be that long before muslims are in the majority and you will have Sharia law.
21:38 May 18, 2010 by waybackwhen
If anybody here had a couple of brain cells to rub together you'd wouldn't be posting on reflex and actually thought about who are behind provocative posts.

The mentality of the readers who comment here are not much different than that of Sverige Demokraterna & BNP.
22:18 May 18, 2010 by heu
@Proud-Muslim: while I agree Bush helped the creation of may terrorists due to his wars, this is completely unrelated to Vilks. And to call that extremism is just absurd or you do not know what extremism is. Specially in Vilks' case, extremism is the criminal reaction to his drawings.

And to dismiss people's opinions (calling them trolls) when they do not agree with you just shows what kind of person you are.
01:43 May 19, 2010 by bravedave
the more the muslims try to oppress their law on the swedes the more they will get fed up with it. Its happening in Belguim, France and Switzerland aswell as Italy and Holland. In most of these countries they have already enforced laws to ban the burka.

It wont be long before they stop taking in so many immigrants and it wont be long before they tame the ones already here.
14:11 May 19, 2010 by Dimetrodon61
I am perfectly even-handed when it comes to Christianity and Islam: Morons have no right to hide behind some "sacred texts" or behind "feeling offended".

There were pre-modern Christian idiots who murdered pagans or heretics; this kind of Christians have become very rare since modern western civilization does not tolerate it.

The same secular law that protects muslims from Christian fanatics also protects Vilks fom muslims.

Under Swedish law any muslims have the right to draw cartoons depicting Hans Vilks, or the Swedish Church in any way they want. The one thing that is not permitted is to commit acts of violence, or telling people they should commit acts of violence.
14:51 May 19, 2010 by daily_reader
this lars vilks, wants to destroy the peace of sweden, just for the sake of his business, and popularity. Authorities should control these things.
17:28 May 19, 2010 by asian123
@proud muslim

dont say asian muslims.

in asia there are many countries in better position than sweden. japan, south korea , thaiwan.

and also china,india

better say muslims from asia or africa or middle east or east european. that best suits to you

dont try to twist the story.

your argument is like this "it is not the fault of rapist , rapists are created by beautiful women who show up their curves".

thats why many muslims women wear burqua as per quran.

muslims suffer with retard thinking.

if you do not like simply go home.
13:47 May 20, 2010 by Bill Clausen
Sweden wanted to show the world how tolerant they are by letting these people into their country and look at what has happened.

The French persecuted Brigitte Bardot when she spoke out about the open border with the Muslim world and a few years later they rioted throughout the country.

The Netherlands realized it's mistake by importing the problems of Muslim countries and is now cracking down on it.

It's very simple: The Western world and the Muslim simply think differently. The Western world should not force its culture upon the Muslim world but should also realize that these people are in most cases leaving countries that they themselves have made undesirable places to be.

Also here is another point Sweden is finding out the hard way: Not all people from Muslim countries get along with each other.

If you feel I'm being intolerant, go and live in a Muslim country and see how well your values and lifestyle are tolerated over there. Even in the politically progressive countries such as Jordan and Egypt, the governments there are under constant pressure from extremists.

@Dimetrodon61 hmmm I am confused here, so can anyone also draw the dog body with jesus or moses face (or any other prophet/god) to ridicule their followers....if its true, than its amazing.
