A 31-year-old Swede is among three people indicted in the United States in connection with a Ukraine-based internet fraud scheme that netted $100 million for its architects.

Internet users in more than 60 countries purchased more than one million bogus software products from the three defendants, two Americans and a Swede, the Justice Department said in a statement.

Björn Daniel Sundin, 31, a Swedish citizen believed to be in Sweden, and Shaileshkumar Jain, 40, a US citizen believed to be living in Ukraine, were each charged with 24 counts of wire fraud and one count each of conspiracy to commit computer fraud and computer fraud.

James Reno, 26, of Amelia, Ohio, was charged with 12 counts of wire fraud and one count each of conspiracy to commit computer fraud and computer fraud and is expected to appear before a US District Court in Chicago.

"These defendants allegedly preyed on innocent computer users, exploiting their fraudulently induced fears for personal gain," said FBI special agent Robert Grant.

Sundin and Jain were the owners and operators of a company called Innovative Marketing located in Kiev that purported to sell anti-virus and computer repair software. Jain was IM's chief executive while Sundin served as chief technology officer.

They are accused of placing fake advertisements on legitimate company websites which led internet users to falsely believe that their computers had been infected with a virus or had critical errors.

The internet users were then induced to buy software products with names such as "ErrorSafe" and "DriveCleaner" to fix the purported problems, paying online by credit card to bank accounts in Europe controlled by the defendants.

The scheme employing what is commonly known as "scareware" is considered one of the fastest-growing and most prevalent types of fraud on the web.

Each count of wire fraud carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.

It was on the radio this morning that the culprits can expect sentences up to 480 yrs. No wonder the jails in the US are overcrowed, no place for the living with all those coffins in the cells.
11:05 May 28, 2010 by sweco1
Looks like they got the right folks.

The spelling of the sir name of the Swede Björn Daniel Sundin, is surprisingly close in spelling to the sir name of Peter Sunde of Pirate Bay.

480 years? that's America for ya. You swedes are lucked to live where you do. You can go out and rape a young woman and get 18 months, or kill a 78 year old woman and get 22 months, or commit almost any crime and get under three years. Sweden....... What a country!! I'm happy to live in Stockholm.

thats real corrective and preventive justice..unlike sweden as described above.

Too bad the charges weren't filed at the local level by a prosecutor here in Texas. We like using the death penalty as a deterrent to crime and once convicted we keep the waiting period as short as possible
14:18 May 28, 2010 by eZee.se
"Shaileshkumar Jain" unless i am mistaken is an Indian (hindu) name, in which case, poor b***ard, they believe a "reincarnation cycle", so every time he gets to come back he might be thrown back in to serve his sentence!

On a more serious note, good for them, these are real low life scumbags, like the music industry execs, only diff is unlike the music industry they have robbed the general population a lot less and have not gotten away with it because of friends in high places - nor corrupted judges or the entire legal system of foreign countries to get their desired results in cases like the ThePirateBay trial...

Just like Obama is similar to Usama, I think you're on to something!

This is very scary. What about every other country in the world also did what the US is doing. The US is worse than the crime and the criminals, a dictatorship where you elect the figurehead. The real danger is different. How do we protect people against the USA? Why don't we take Bush to court for war crimes?
11:33 May 29, 2010 by calebian22
rolfkrohna,

So the criminals need to be protected from the US justice system? That rich coming from Sweden where murder gets you 22 months.
13:11 May 31, 2010 by flintis
Had to laugh when I heard the quote 480yrs, nearly crashed the car, isn't the American judicial system aware that we "humans" usually die before we attain 100yrs??

The punishment should fit the crime!! Obviously some US citizen lost a few dollars in this scam, so much for justice, just shows the lack of ethics in the world today.

They are called "counts" Each carries a different sentence. The punishment does fit the crime, 12 times. What is so incomprehensible about that?

"The ice dripped in the winter sun. It was the first day when the light had been intense enough to cause dripping in the sunlight. To hear it was an extraordinary wakeup call. The cycle was happening again as it always does, always will (or so we think). I imagined that on my summer island, the bees..." READ »
