Baking prisoner banned over booze fears

A court has forbidden a cake-loving criminal from baking buns after jail chiefs suspected he might use the yeast to brew alcohol.

"We need to keep an eye on the yeast," said prison chief Gert-Arne Sköld.
"If a prisoner, who might have problems with aggression, gets hold of the kind of alcohol that this would produce, it can have very strange effects. You could easily get problems with keeping order," Sköld told local paper Östgöta Correspondenten.
The prisoner appealed the prison’s decision to the Swedish Administrative Court, but judges agreed that there was a risk that the yeast would be used for producing alcohol rather than baking.
"This is one of the best known phenomena in the prison service - a phenomenon we have had for many years. Long before drugs came into the picture, prisoners have tried to get their hands on intoxicating substances," said Sköld.

The real question should be, should prisioners have the home comforts of baking? Aren´t they in prison to punish NOT to make a home from home??
bakers and brewers have there own yeast only because they know what it is exactly!
it does prove beyond doubt that the custody and legal system in Sweden has not got a clue and are next to useless! (morons)

they could either use wild yeast as soft boiled said or they could give the prisoner a piece of sour (mother) dough and he could bake to his hearts content
It is true that the tradition was make prisoners suffere the way they have made their victims suffer. The problem is that prisoners who come out feeling that they were persecuted could committee serious crime after they are realeased. Most turn to be hardened criminals.
It is found out it is to society's advantage to reform a prisoner for the purpose of protecting society from the crimes that he/she would have committed otherwise.
This argument does not apply to prisoners who are condemned to death or life long prison terms.
As you have suggested there are other ways of making alchol and that there is no purpose in preventing the prisoner from doing what might become his profession upon release. For those who are bent to distill alcohol, increase the prison terms or cut down other privilleges.
